The Mississippi River dumps into the gulf and the currents push all that shite west. Exactly why the water is nice once you cross the mobile bay.
The water is nice before then. Go out to Ship Island and it’s beautiful.

One year I went to Mardi Gras at Galveston. Even though it was around 50 degrees, we went to the beach during the day. There were cars and trucks parked all over the beach, and people were outside them in chairs getting drunk. It was more like a tailgate than going to the beach or Mardi Gras.
The Mardi Gras was pretty lame, but I did have a cop throw a guy thru a glass door about six feet away from me. The bouncers had thrown him out, and he kept trying to get back in. When two cops came to arrest him, he ran inside. Seconds later he came back out through the glass. We had been standing in front, after leaving the bar. My friends and I walked down the street to get away from the crowd that gathered around the ruckus.
The whole time we were down there high school-age girls kept coming up, trying to hand me money, while asking me to buy drinks for them. That's something I've never done. I think they were wanting someone to buy drinks for all of their friends and boy friends, because they were the best looking girls in the bars. The boys probably figured people would be more apt to buy those girls drinks. They were still there, doing that when we left the bars around 3 am. I was wondering where their parents thought they were.

Texas beaches are on west side of Mississippi River delta. Water currents in GOM push muddy water to the West. Bad for beaches.

quote:It used to be like wild like a combination of New Orleans, the Wild West, and a pirate island. The port moved as much cotton as any other in the US. They had casinos, illegal booze and brothels. Lots of wealthy folks, including gangsters lived or kept homes there. An old guy I knew in Dallas told me all about it. Wiki backs up his stories.
I mean, it is a perfectly fine place to run away to if you live in Houston.
But it isn't some pristine tourist destination at all, in my opinion. The whole feel of the place hasn't been the same since Ike.

quote:
During the Roaring Twenties, Galveston Island emerged as a popular resort town, attracting celebrities from around the country.[1][2] Gambling, illegal liquor, and other vice-oriented businesses were a major part of tourism. The "Free State" moniker embodied a belief held by many locals that Galveston was beyond what they perceived were repressive mores and laws of Texas and the United States. Two major figures of the era were the businessmen, power brokers and crime bosses Sam and Rosario Maceo, who ran the chief casinos and clubs on the island and were heavily involved in local politics and the tourism industry. The success of vice on the island, despite being illegal, was enabled by lax attitudes in the society and the government, both on the island and in the county. In one of the more famous examples of this, a state committee, investigating gambling at the fabled Balinese Room, was told by the local sheriff that he had not raided the establishment because it was a "private club" and because he was not a "member".
Sounds like Concordia Parish in the 60's.

Crystal Beach/Bolivar Peninsula is fun in that you can drive on the beach in your vehicle or golf cart. There are several places to rent golf carts and a few good restaurants. Even a decent albeit small water park. The vibe is an old school beach town with no high rises. Fun to visit or even have a camp there but still brown sand and water.
Does anyone know if the state of Texas ever filled in Rollover Pass. I don’t fish so I don’t keep up.

I grew up in the Houston area. Galveston beaches are ugly, but when you're a kid living in that area- it's your beach.
When you grow up and go to Destin- you are blown away.

1. SPI
2. Port A/North Padre
3. N/A
Others - upper coast.
Grew up going to Galveston all the time as a kid and in high school Have a warm place in my heart - lots of time spent on East Beach getting hammered and chasing women. I've seen the water brown and I've seen it so clear you could surf fish chest deep and see your feet. Just depends on the wind.
