It is this simple for the people in the OP. If you dont like what we have now, here are your choices:
1. Pay 15-20% for your food in order to cover the difference the owner will have to pay in order to keep his waitstaff
2. Enjoy having fast food type employees serving you and your date valentines dinner

What do you mean? That is their hourly wage their employer pays them.
yes. but they take in a hell pf a whole lot more untaxed cash every night.
you cant sit there and bitch aboutthe 2.40 knowing the tip system lets you earn way more than you would on a regular per hour basis.
also they are the ones that chose that job. i have no sympathy for them if they get stiffed on a optional part of the bill

Not as much anymore. With most people paying with debit/credit cards and tipping on those...the tip is on paper. So it's claimed as part of income and you are taxed on it as well.

Have you ever worked in the service industry? If you suck as a server, you don't get great tips. Also, without previous server experience....it's not like you can just walk up and work at the nicer restaurants anyways.

Man you're kind of a dick if you don't tip. It's like a social contract that we agree to adhere to living in America.

yes i have and yes it sucks, but noone is making you do it and just because you served someone doesnt mean youre entitled to a tip. thats what gets me, is the people that are shitty at their jobs and still expect to be tipped

i do tip. i just reserve my right to not tip when i get shitty service

I used to work at a high end restaurant. Sadly the stereotypes are very true when it comes to tipping. It's just not a thing in some cultures.

It's a service v. a product. If you buy a TV you get the EXACT TV you wanted, nothing more, nothing less, there is no varying level of the item. Service is different, you can get all kinds of levels of service, so tipping is a way to incentivize a good "product" which is the service.
Like the guy said, you'd get the cost one way or another.

I don't think anyone is saying if you recieve shitty service you should tip. But tipping is expected here in the good old US of A. If you don't like, move to Europe with all those no tipping queers.

Do you like spit in your drink or food?
I generally eat lunch at only a few places.I over tip.
Sometimes they only charge me for 1 draft when I had 3.
I don't have a lot of overhead in my life so I enjoy giving a nice tip to someone if they treat me well.
I like to think that maybe it brightened their day a little.
eta:I agree with you Nurse. If I pay with my Debit Card I always tip cash. That way I know they get the tip right away.

I think everyone agrees that if you receive horrible service you aren't tipping that server 20% or anything.
And in higher end restaurants....those type of servers won't last long anyways. So then that server is let go and ends up at Chili's.

Congrats on being trolled guys.

So you want to have degenerates that can't find any other job (which is who will be left) to serve/handle your food?
I'll just leave my 10% bad service 15% not good 20% standard

because waiters and waitresses make shite money without tips. The restaurant could pay them more but then they would have to pay more in all the taxes that go along with it. Just tip 20% for good service, 15% for okay service and 0% for bad service.

As a restaurant manager, tipping should be absolutely required. For those of you that have or know someone that has stiffed a server, you are also stiffing anywhere from 2-10 other people. Every restaurant has some kind of tip out system for host, bussers, bar, etc. Depending how the tip out goes, the server might have to pay out of their own pockets to wait on you. I have for sure been to places and had HORRIBLE service but I would never hurt the other employees of the restaurant that might be doing a fantastic job. Exceptional service deserves more than just 20%.

Because it's part of the price of the meal. If you don't like it don't go.
Posted on 9/12/14 at 6:23 pm to StickyFingaz
Yeah my standard is 20%. I'm pretty easy to please. Bring out what I ordered and if it's taking too long...at least give me a head's up and be apologetic about it. Make sure my water glass doesn't go low. Check on me regularly during my meal.
It's all about attitude as well. People make mistakes, we all do. If I ask for something and you just plain forgot...but rush and bring it when I remind you and apologize...I'm willing to let that slide.
You give me above and beyond...I will tip well for that.

isnt that kind of what most waiters are excluding the high end places?

Don't take the job if it's so shitty. What's fair is what people are willing to pay someone to do the job and what people are willing to accept as payment. If you get paid minimum wage then that is what your labor is worth. If you don't like that, you can move on and try to get a better paying job.
I actually like the ability to tip. I hate when a restaurant adds in a tip like some do and I get shitty service. I like that me having a factor in how much $$$ a server is going to take home that day is going to get me better service.

You have to start somewhere though if you want to get to be a server at the high end places.
And with the other places...you have to bust your arse more if you want to make decent tips...because your food bills are lower
