isnt that kind of what most waiters are excluding the high end places?
You have to start somewhere though if you want to get to be a server at the high end places.
And with the other places...you have to bust your arse more if you want to make decent tips...because your food bills are lower
You don't have to start at a low end place to get a job at a higher end restaurant. No, you cannot go straight into serving but I started as a busser before I ever served.

Most of the time I tip. If the service isn't great but it's obvious the person is trying their best, I'll give them a normal tip. If they are just awful and aren't even trying to be a good server, they get nothing.
Just because you make $2.50 an hour doesn't entitle you to a tip.

Wait tables for one day in a busy restaurant....and then tell me that "at least minimum wage" is fair
When I was young I flipped Quarter Pounders at McDonald's and collected grocery carts outdoors during a Baton Rouge summer. No, I was not happy with the wages. FWIW at the time minimum wage was $3.35/hr.
Instead of complaining about it I upped my skills by starting to take my schooling more seriously, and that paid off very well.
You want to be paid better? Acquiring skills that can't be taught in an hour to some random Joe is a good start.

While I agree that if you want to make better money you have to take it upon yourself. I think the point is that all these people who don't understand why tipping is necessary don't realize that the alternative is having a burger flipper from Wendy's as your server when you go out.
If I'm being a cheap arse I'll order take out

Doesn't state law require the restaurant to compensate employees up to minimum wage if their $2.40 + tips doesn't equal at least minimum wage?

While I do believe in tipping for good service, your statement is retarded.

Its standard custom in the United States. Go to Europe and you will find waiters paid a higher wage and tips either optional or very minimal. Often times its just automatically added to your bill (10%).
You need to look carefully at the receipt because there will still be a tip line to add extra. Dumbass americans just add $$ because they didnt realize it was already covered.

You chose that job little lady! Get a real job at 19 with no work experience and taking 15 hours of classes!

You can't afford to eat out
You poor

On top of paying for my food, I also have to pay the restaurant's employee. Why aren't restaurants required to pay their employees (atleast minimum wage)
The real question is, why do you go to restaurants w/ waiters if you aren't going to tip? ALthough some people grow up in a low class trashy setting, where it is common not to tip since daddy being a janitor doesn't pay the best.

This never occurred while I was a server. If it is a law, most restaurants probably don't follow it because it's hard to prove

Being poor isn't an excuse to not tip. Just means when you do go out to eat, it's a treat you don't experience much and tip is factored into the cost of the experience.

I said poor and trashy, but I shoulda just said "trashy". But this guy did seem poor too
But your right, poor is not a reason not to tip.

I like the idea of putting like 25% of what you think your bill will be on the table as you arrive, tell them they get to keep it all if they are great and then removing $ from it right in front of them if they frick up.
I have never done it but I have always liked that idea, it would give them even more incentive to provide good service and would truly reward the good ones and punish the shitty ones.
ETA: Or you could start with 15% and then add or subtract based on the service.

No, the alternative is that if you want customers to pay well for service, you need to work in a position where you can establish a relationship that lasts longer than one dinner.
Waitstaff can do better at a top dollar restaurant but that's because the restaurant has carefully chosen the best waitstaff. A top waiter/waitress understands that the most important relationship is with the employer, not with whomever happens to be dining that night.

I worked in the service industry from 16-24... When I moved to BR most wait staff are college students.
Other older people may serve bc they make decent untaxed money... Except when ppl like you show up. I understand if the service is shitty, but it takes a lot for me to straight up not tip. That's BS and I know how it feels. If the place is slammed ppl need to realize that it may be a little off and not get all pissy.

Not sure what that has to do with what would happen without tipping, but ok
