You think all the little shite heads running around on Adderall or Focalin are seeing psychiatrists?
I don't believe the poster thinks that at all. He simply said psychiatrist SHOULD be the one making that diagnosis.

It's your wife's decision. It isn't cocaine or herion.
I've been taking it for 12 years... mostly because I like to feel up. I haven't experienced anything dangerous. When I stop taking it, takes a couple days to adjust. Great way to get shite done. Probably not for everyone, having done my share of drugs long ago... no big deal in my opinion.

I've been around the block or two on them, enough to now know that I'm generally anti-meds when it comes to my own body. However many of my loved ones are on them and it seems to do whatever they need them to. For several years I was being treated for depression and was on a steady diet of Prozac. Problem is that I'm a fairly creative person, and it made me basically not want to do shite. Like - at all. It was overall no bueno and cutting them out of my life ended up being a great move.
Bottom line is this. Doctors are great but you can't look at them like they're some kind of shaper of your life. They're designed to help you medically but they're also pushers just like every other drug dealer. That hot girl in the lobby dragging around the rolling suitcase - she's not there to help you. She's there to make money and doctors are more than happy to scratch their backs.

Just make sure she knows once you’ve been taking adderall for a while, it’s hell trying to get off that medication.
Maybe try a lower dose of Ritalin if she absolutely needs the medication.

Do a quick Google search with the words "Adderall divorce" and read all about it. Just wait until she starts to build up a tolerance and doubles her dose, then runs out in the last week or 2. If she made it to she 37 then the risk is not worth the reward at this point.

You can have adult diagnosed ADD which is more prevalent in women.

Not everyone gets mood swings. Some people have them more without the medication from overstimulation. Not saying it fixes everything, but everyone reacts differently and it could help his wife if she really needs it. Especially if she’s going in at 37 y/o for this stuff.

No it doesn’t. It affects some people differently but usually there are underlying issues. Plenty of women are fine on adderalll.

Get the rx even if she doesn’t want to take them; rx of adderall with all the shortages going on would cover your car note these days.

Yeah it’s the same class, but “treating like meth” is a reach.
If she has an addictive personality or drug abuse problem, then yeah, I’d be concerned. But if the poor woman legitimately has undiagnosed ADHD then a low dose of Adderall can help her along with cognitive therapy.
This is complete BS. ADD/ADHD people miss and move a lot of appointments. Worse than others because you have no awareness of time and your memory is screwy. Unless it’s tattooed to your arm and you set 8 reminders, you won’t remember.
While I agree it’s overprescribed to the extreme and only a psychiatrist should be able to prescribe it after testing, the assumptions surrounding the drug and people with ADD are overgeneralized.

Dude addy fricks me up because i dont need it. I wouldnt sleep for days on that shite.
Yeah it doesn’t work like that for people who need it if you aren’t taking too high of doses. I can take mine and fall asleep within an hour.

If she has an addictive personality or has been addicted to things before then I would have concerns.
Otherwise, talk to her about going to see a psychiatrist. It can take a while so taking the adderall in a very small dose until she gets a full diagnosis won’t hurt. The testing can be expensive but is worth it to get fully evaluated. Adderall isn’t a fix all either. Nor does it have to be taken all the time. She needs to look into cognitive therapy and some books for adults on managing ADHD. Those will be the most helpful and eventually she may not need the Adderall.
Quit asking advice on OT Lounge of all places and talk to her. Hear her out on her concerns and don’t dismiss her or start that shite about “well you’ve handled it so far”. ADD can go undiagnosed well into adulthood. Support her in this journey to becoming what she feels is her best self even if you think she’s great as she is. Chances are she has an entire list of perceived shortcomings that she hides from you or masks when you’re around.
And since you’re into research, look into articles about adult ADD/ADHD like
LINK among others. Don’t limit yourself to just side effect research or addiction potential as you’re skewing your judgement.
Organizations like CHADD and NIH have stuff as well that shows you the side of ADD if she does have it.
ADDitude Magazine is a good resource for you both. There’s a lot of information that may help explain what she’s been dealing with that led her to seek out help and also tools to help without solely relying on medication.
It’s clear that you care about her. But you need to support and hear her out with an open mind.
