I'm just not a huge fan of suburbs, regardless of city. If I worked in downtown Houston - and thus made enough money to buy 4000 square feet in the Woodlands - I would buy something smaller near downtown. There are plenty of good neighborhoods inside the loop. The whole place feels artificial to me, and I hate the idea of an hour commute. So all that would go out the window if I worked at Anadarko or Exxon.
I can understand this. I like nice looking suburbs, but I get why a lot of people don't. Especially the cookie cutter communities (like mine

I have a friend who teaches in Houston (proper, not a suburb) and he tells me it's nothing like the suburban school districts.
HISD is a great school district, there are a lot of really good public school in Houston (proper)

NOLA > BR
No you dont. With the population of BR it should have more options. Stagnation and little to offer young professionals and families will keep those folks in other cities.

BR is working its way towards Austin in the terrible traffic department.
Except that Austin builds new six-lane freeways in the middle of existing surface streets faster than BR can widen Staring Lane.

well first, I don't live in BR
and secondly, BR is improving
slowly...but it is improving
it's not going to happen overnight

This I will say I have never heard anyone say. Everyone I know that lives in HISD sends their kids to private schools or ultimately moves out to the burbs.

I don't think anyone is denying the serious problems of North BR. But most of us in South BR are very far removed from that.
A lot of people seem to feel this way, but what's stopping it from becoming more than a North Baton Rouge problem?
I'd bet people who bought in Shenandoah felt this way too about 15-20 years ago.

Well there is the BRAVE initiative, and so far it's working in cracking down on crime in North BR.

That's where I lived in 2002 and saw the handwriting on the wall.

It's not just dining options and entertainment that BR lacks. Its the jobs. most people don't care that much if their hamburger is from a local place or from a restaurant with *gasp* more than one location. It's good jobs which attract good people who build a good community. BR lacks the jobs.

I don't live there anymore so maybe I'm talking our of my arse, but all I see is tons of money being dumped in to developer areas south of Florida Blvd.
It's like someone already said, Baton Rouge doesn't need a new shopping center or movie theater. It needs people there who give a shite.
Fix the schools. Stop the brain drain. Then I'll think that it's improving.

Yeah I live in one of those terrifying suburbs too. I have to tolerate manicured lawns and landscaping, no litter, no crime, no second hand rap, and good public schools. It's a nightmare. And I sometimes eat at places that have multiple locations.

If you cannot see a pattern and how it is not stopping then I don't know what to tell you.

Good paying Jobs to attract young professionals? Not enough of them.

You're right, and so why would BR people care about their own city if they can't get their minds around why they should support their own neighbors who constitute the backbone of that city and community?

Well, they've had great success so far with the BRAVE. And Gardere has actually improved in recent years.
You were bashing Shenadoah earlier. Idk what that's about. I have two co-workers who live there and have no plans to move. I drive thru every now and then and it looks the same to me.

I was in the Woodlands this past week visiting relatives. I will tell you now that Baton Rouge will NEVER be like the Woodlands. It would be nice IF Baton Rouge could ever be like the Woodlands, but it is laughable to even think it could be. I actually did laugh when I read the topic.

quote:agreed. It will neeed a major facelift if BR wants to be remotely close to the woodlands and that could take decades.
