It was absolutely real. The emotion in his face and voice after he sat down is pretty obvious.

For those saying it’s fake because Rock didn’t do anything…what was he supposed to do. I doubt he thought Will was gonna slap the shite out of him. Was he supposed to run?

Ratings, plain and simple.

They waited until the show was 3/4ths over to pull the stunt?

My question got lost on the bottom of the previous page, and I’m too tired now to toy with the board’s edgy, compulsive cynics, so Ill ask just once more to get an answer: why wait so long to do the fight if it were a ratings ploy?

It was a slap, not a punch, and Rock no-sold it like a boss. Not a good look for Smith, especially followed by the profanity with kids in the crowd.

It wasn’t practiced during rehearsals - wasn’t staged. Smith was legit pissed. Jada has been dealing with alopecia and I guess he felt this joke crossed the line.

The slap looked fake as frick but the reaction after doesn't seem like something the Oscars would be behind

Do people really think a pampered Hollywood mega-millionaire knows how to hit someone?? It looked like a bitch-slap and that's about what I would expect from Will Smith if ever got into a fight (though I must say this set of circumstances is beyond strange).

Chris Rock isn't a good enough actor to pull off the exchange after. The slap looks so fake, though.

So, an actor crying and being consoled by two other actors sold it for you?

I'm not sold on Smith doing this to himself just to help the Oscar's with their ratings.

If it's staged, they did a great job.

What I find funny is that the people who won't believe a single word that 90% of the media tells them will buy in completely to something portrayed by literal Hollywood actors.

A) Chris Rock would not agree to be bitch slapped on stage by Will Smith.

B) The Smiths are exceptionally notoriously narcissistic and petty and would have never agreed to them being ridiculed at the Oscars, especially when it comes to a medical condition.

C) There’s exceptionally bad blood between Smith and Rock.

D) If the Oscars were actually concerned about the ratings, they would have nominated Spider-Man No Way Home for Best Picture and gotten Ricky Gervais to host, not hired Will Smith to slap Chris Rock.

As crazy as Will is, I don’t think he’d agree to stage something like this on the biggest night of his professional career.

Yea that's a fair point. The slap is overshadowing his first Oscar win.

Well I guess Will Smith doesn’t have to cuss in his raps to sell records but he does have to cuss to take up for his bald arse wife????

It will definitely boost the ratings for an otherwise forgettable show, so they kind of just stumbled into some “any publicity is good publicity” here

But this wasn’t scripted

It was staged. First clue is Chris's behavior as Will comes on stage. He doesn't look surprised, puzzled, alarmed, confused or anything one truly would be if someone just all of a sudden came up on stage without invitation or any warning. Especially if someone was walking like Will--hurriedly, purposefully, and menacingly straight toward Chris. Chris doesn't move or dodge out of the way, and he doesn't ask any questions, trying to ascertain the situation. Most people would be asking "Hey, what's going on, what are you doing?"

It’s well established in the psychological literature that most people freeze up when presented with novel stimuli. When presented with something entirely unexpected that you’ve never experienced before, even if it clearly represents a threat of violence, most people will stand relatively motionless. It’s your brain short circuiting trying to process it.

It’s why most people who conceal carry never draw their guns even in situations that warrant it.

Was this before or after he finished laughing at the joke that made him "mad"

I’d say the majority of the population can’t throw a proper punch. Will throwing a shitty open face slap as a spur of the moment thing seems real to me.

Rock would’ve had a much better comeback to Smith cussing him out if this was staged.

Exactly, he started to say something after Will repeatedly said to keep his wife's name out his fricking mouth, but pulled back.

You know his comedic insult brain was going a million miles a minute, computing every last possibility of insult that included his wife and mouth but Rock relented saying, I'm going to, OK.
