Lol. Generations fighting about who sucks more. It's a story as old as time itself.

That is what the thread has become. Initially, I was just asking if my generation is a lost generation.

Agreed. Blame the Civil Rights Act. Barry Goldwater tried to save you, but the boomers didn't listen, they just didn't listen.

See born in 1983 though I remember when NO ONE had computers, before cable was huge, cassette tapes, when the pre-internet with 9600 baud modems and where BBS's compuserv, prodigy, and eventually AOL came to be, when computers with just a black and green colored screen were $5,000 and up, and the first cordless phone was like star trek to everyone.

I think there's a huge gap between me being from 1983, and my step daugher born in 1996 who was born in the era of high speed internet, CD/DVD, computers in every house, and by the time she was 5 years old cell phones were the norm and iPods were getting big. I think it's harder to pin down a timeline now than it used to be, but her and I are worlds apart. Yet according to most definitions we are both millennials. I think there has to be a stop gap and it should be around 1990 rather than 1980.

Yeah, we just had to deal with our nation being directly attacked and the media taking off with it and turning us into a fear mongering society. All millenials fault clearly, and not the Boomers who are the assholes running the media. They're in it for ratings, and they know scaring the shite out of everyone is how to get them. No journalistic integrity since they took over, which they actually had while they were growing up.

They could get pissed, buckle down, and pull this country out the crapper. Or, since they are a spoiled generation, demand the government do it for them.

And how are we supposed to due that when they really just take age into account of getting a great job?

There is. Generation X stops around 1980 and the 15 years or so after was generation Y I think.

I consider millennials to have been born around 1995

This thread is hilarious, younger people have been hearing "kids these days don't respect their elders like my generation did, now everything is ruined and it's all yall's fault" for as long as humans have been capable of communication.

I usually go with the current 18-34 demographic (1981-97).

Well I guess you fall into either group depending on people's definition.

False. Job hunting is just more difficult due to our modern HR culture. Those doing the hiring are not the same as those performing the jobs, and not the same as those teaching prospective workers how to work in that industry, causing a massive disconnect between what companies need, what companies look for in applicants, and what applicants actually know. The "experience" gap is real. It's hard to start climbing the ladder when the first rung requires "5 years relevant experience" that can only be gained by already being on that first rung.

Yeah, forgot to mention this. Applying online automatically filters applicants that are almost certainly qualified for the job. They never reach HR's desk, nevertheless the hiring manager since it's even further filtered after that. It's completely different than when this guy was in the market. Hell, I got my most recent job by lying on the online bubble that I had 5 years experience in a certain field, and they liked my background anyway when they read my truthful resume. It's just a bunch of shite.

The Greatest Generation faced coming of age during the Great Depression & WWII.

Boomers & Gen X's dealt with the oil embargo in the early 70's, and recessions in the 70's early 80's, and again in the early 90's. They also grew up with the possibility that the entire world could be destroyed in a nuclear holocaust on any given day within the next 40 minutes or so.

Point being, every generation faces shite that it had no part in creating. Life's not fair. Suck it up, Buttercup.

You don't have to start out with a a "great" job. Nobody starts out with a "great" job". Just get "a" job and be happy you've got it. Pay your dues like the rest of us had to and the "great" job will come down the road.

I want to believe you, but so many of my contemporaries have 4 year college degrees and are still working the same jobs they had in high school. They're working 60 hours a week, 2 jobs, and getting nowhere. I know too many people like that. They want to move up. They aren't afraid to work hard, but the next rung on the jobs ladder seems perpetually out of reach. What are they supposed to do? No one will hire them for entry level positions in their degree fields because they don't have 5 years of relevant experience in those fields. They've been working 2 jobs at a time since they were 16, but none of that experience matters to HR software.

They don't get any breaks, and none are going to come to them unless they radically change course. To what? I don't know. They'll never earn enough to amass the capital to open up their own businesses, their student loans mean they'll never have the credit rating to get a loan even if they could make a down payment. They're literally trapped in an economy that was not made for them to be able to thrive.

What's going on today has nothing to do with respecting elders.
