I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure the city has the right and responsibility to seize and or demolish hazardous buildings and homes. You think the owner would be allowed to just leave a building in the middle of the city that could collapse at any moment and they city just has to sit by and allow it?

Yeah. People arguing that the city can't do anything about it are about as retarded as the city officials who have let this go on themselves.

Unstable building? Let's just leave it to fall in it's own whenever it wants.

Thanks for the reply. I born and raised in NO and BR. Moved to California over a decade and a half ago.
I just don’t understand- I was raised with a true appreciation of human dignity. My male classmates, poor or rich, suburban or rural, black or white, would’ve attempted to climb up there and cover that man for dignity’s sake as children. I’m truly shaking my head at everyone’s indifference. A tarp is little better than open air. How is it that NO just hosted a bunch of bowl/championship games and this wasn’t mentioned? I’ve never even witnessed this sort of depravity in the third world. I don’t know what the “proper channels” are but everyone with an ounce of power should have been using it to get this man’s remains to his family. The city probably could have threatened a lawsuit and offered a better settlement if the company immediately turned over the property. The property could have been condemned and seized. The media should live out there until there’s a proper burial. The talking heads on both sides should’ve shut up about left/right and focused on the standard of human dignity any civilized society should have (not leaving a body to rot in the open).

I truly appreciate the heart of the Union guys jumping in here.

This is the same union guys who showed up the next day with a 20T crane to solve all the problems because they knew that they wouldn't be allowed near the site.

The owner of the site isn't going to give it up without a huge fight.

In a proper society, the owner should be afraid to walk the streets and too ashamed to challenge anything in court.

I don’t know the whole story, but I understand salt of the Earth, tough workers wanting to extract a comrade for the sake of all that is good. At least they brought a crane, it seems like far too many people are bringing indifference.

These are the guys who were protesting that 'comrade' having a job just before the building fell.

And have said the reason for the building falling is because of that 'comrades' inexperience and him not being in a union.

I've been accused of being blindly pro-union on this site more times than I can count. The union is being jackasses here.

Assuming he did something wrong. Which may or may not be.

The building fell- a prima facie case he did something wrong. For evidence, see every successfully constructed building.

Yet, they were there, willing to risk their lives, to give him his dignity. As for the inexperience, maybe they had a point. This was very much a preventable accident. Their views on worker qualifications dont say anything regarding how they feel about the guy personally. I’m MAGA but there’s nothing great about treating a human being this way. I agree with the early poster that this is when government should step in with an iron fist.

Engineering firm screwed the pooch on a new hotel resort, it collapsed and killed three workers, but we got a black mayor so it's her fault somehow.

I understand the developer is not an engineer, architect, or contractor. I also understand you generally can’t delegate all liability to an underling entity.
