Just bought a butt load of stuff at Home Depot. The checker missed a 40.00 dead bolt and I only realized it after getting to my truck. Went right back and paid for it...she was shocked I came back. I will tell you like I told her. I don't care if it's 40 cents or 400 bucks,I am giving it back cause I don't need the karma that comes with stealing.....and taking something knowing you didn't pay in full for it is 100% stealing.

I'd like to say I would have said something but who knows

But what if all your good deeds gave you the karma to get a $40 deadbolt for free? Ever thought of it that way?

maybe, but you've got a damn good defense if they charge you with shoplifting/TOP. Most statutes require the intent to conceal or defraud. OP walked straight up to the register with this item the same as every other item he paid for.

Wouldn't an alarm go off at the door from it not being a scanned item?

It's proper etiquette to mention that you have an item in your buggy you want scanned. But ultimately the cashier is responsible for making sure everything in your cart has been scanned.

My story.....got to my car, found a small pack of batteries that was not paid for, went back.....the cashier could not believe I returned to pay for the itam....my comment it would have been stealing

Should have slipped a 5'er in her tip jar, paid the $30.00 and wished her a blessed rest of the day.
