Got a notice at work today that BP is paying "settlement" checks to fishermen. This is the first that I'm hearing of this. Anyone have any more info on this?

No but I heard a local shrimper on tv saying that he "doesn't want a handout ... I want to go to work". I was pretty impressed but not surprised ... that's what people in this area do. Guy was well spoken, clean cut older guy ...
I'm sure it'll be on the news soon enough.

Yeah I thought a bout switching jobs for a day when I heard about it. I wonder what the fishermen have to sign to get that check

Don't take it...you will be signing away your opportunity for further compensation if your claim is legitimate.

yeah this sounds like a switcheroo to me. Unless the language of the contract (or whatever) specifically articulates that receipt of this money does not waive or delay additional requests for reimbursement of losses, then i wouldn't do it. Those shrimpers make way more than 5K in a season.

That is so small for their loss. They won't even think of taking that. Class action all the way.

That covers the boat for 3-4 days, don't know how much that's gonna help. My brother in law works for a charter company in Venice and they had every day in June booked. The summer they are losing IS the year for them, but hopefully not the business.

they came out with those on the 2nd or 3rd day.
if you take that check you are saying that is your entire liability.
unless you made less than $5000 last year, its a bad deal.
It works only for people who under-report on their taxes.
When this is over, you will be able to take your tax returns from the past few years and get the average back in money from BP and the team Halliburton and the rig company transocean.

Attorney General Troy King has asked BP to cease circulating settlement agreements among south Alabamians. Alabama Attorney General Troy King said tonight that he has told representatives of BP Plc. that they should stop circulating settlement agreements among coastal Alabamians.
The agreements, King said, essentially require that people give up the right to sue in exchange for payment of up to $5,000.
Yours to gamble...

Just got an update on this. The fishermen do not have to sign a waiver to receive this check. All they need to provide is their commercial fishing license (they are now checking the licenses to make sure that people arent just buy a license to get the payout) and their boats registration. Captains are getting $5000, and deck hands are getting $2500.
Supposedly they will receive these checks monthly until this oil mess is cleaned up.

That is good news. If the bullshite artist with GM and all of the bank thieves can get several billion in bailout money, I think it is only fair that someone come up with some money for these guys.

The checks are marked "Partial Settlement".

Many don't apply for the license. Where does that leave them?

$5000 is a joke
5K a month? really? Are there a bunch of fisherman making more than that per month?

Yeah that's a messed up situation. And what is it with them saying they are now "checking" the dates of the license? You have to get them every year and just because you don't have it yet doesn't mean you weren't going to get them in the next few weeks for shrimping for example.
BP deserves everything they get. frick them. :)
