I'm telling you man, this right here is the shite. They're hard to find but if you can't get one, it'll out live you and it will legit require zero maintenance.
I've had one since the late 80's. It will absolutely, positively never, ever fail you. The drag is like silk and it was also the first spinning reel to utilize a worm gear, level wind system.
Daiwa has never made a better spinning reel than this.

Great classic reel.
Respectfully, I dont see why someone would buy one new at this time. Materials and design have come a long way.

It can take an absolute beating and will never, ever fail. It's the best drag I've ever had and it casts beautifully. Daiwa got this right.

Don't overlook the Pluger President series.
These really are excellent reels and can be had for less than $90.

Thanks to this thread I ordered 3 stradic 2500 from Digitaka for $458!! That’s about a 3 for the price of 2.
Now what rod should I get? Mainly for Specks.
St Croix Mojo? 7’ medium light?

I just bought a few Kistler rods (on sale right now). I really like these rods. Can always go with something like Falcon or St Croix - good rods.

No votes for the Penn battles, has Penn quality fallen?

I've got one and it's lasted for years, but they're a bit heavier and clunkier than say a stradic of equal class.

My good friend who fishes for a living inshore, and has for decades, is a Penn guy and his gear is great. If it's gear that takes a beating every single day on bull reds and sharks, you can't beat Penn. Like you said, they'll last forever with occasional service.
My pfluger rec above is more for the recreational weekend warrior type of guy to get a great reel without spending a ton of money.
