Def a 30-30. 223 is questionable for deer in my opinion, especially for a beginner.

Plenty of deer are killed with a .223 but for a kid I think you’d want a heavier bullet that the 30-30 would offer.

30-30 is fine if shooting 100 yds or less. Just have to know it’s limitations as that round drops like a rock.

Started out with a .270 and then I bought a .308 on my own. I would def go with .308 and that way ur son can have a rifle for a lifetime.

Dont limit yourself or him. Go for a forever rifle. Something Browning or Custom in a tried and true caliber like .270, .308, etc. He is 12 its time.

I have a 577 Rigby that I will let him shoot
