Title: CampFest: March 18 - 20
Date: Friday March 18, 2011
Location: Chicot State Park, near Ville Platte, Louisiana
Notes: CampFest 2011 will be held Friday afternoon, March 18th - through Sunday afternoon March 20th at the Chicot State Park East Landing Meeting Lodge. The cost is $5.00 per camper (under 12 free). There will be outdoor seminars, hiking, paddling, and LOTS of door prizes. Door prizes have been donated by Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Backpacker, LDP Camping Foods, Pack & Paddle and more! Saturday evening we will have a BBQ prepared by our very own Craig Watson. LHC provides the meat and you provide the side dish. Prizes will be awarded for the best salad, dessert, etc. Sunday morning breakfast will be prepared by the famed Pancake King Larry Langlois and his motley crew of assistants.

There are free tent camping, toilets, a kitchen, and a dining hall available. Showers are available for free at the main park area for tent campers. Leave No Trace camping ethics apply. By request of the rangers at Chicot, RV's and campers may not camp in the Day Camping area. RV pads, camper pads and cabins are available and can be rented by calling Chicot State Park at 337 363-2403.

We are asking everyone again this coming year to help reduce paper waste at CampFest. Please bring your own plates, cups and utensils.

Directions: From exit 46 on I-49 take 106W. To get to the east landing, turn left at the power plant and continue on the road until you arrive at the meeting lodge. Look for the LHC signs!

This is put on by the Louisiana Hiking Club but you don't have to be a member to attend CampFest.

Pack and Paddle (Lafayette) will probably be there with some canoes/kayaks to demonstrate in the lake nearby. Not sure though because I missed it last year. Some people bring their own kayaks/canoes for leisure activities on the water.

I can't be sure though but I'll try to find out.

If you've never been to Chicot State Park, check it out this weekend. One of the best state parks in the country. GREAT fishing, beautiful scenery, wildlife galore (including LOTS of gators in the lake so be careful with the canoe/kayaking), over 20 miles of trails-including a horseback riding trail, new beautiful cabins, tons of very nice rv/trailer spots, playgrounds for the kiddies, & some nice paved roads to do some biking-also can bike the trails. They also have a picnic day use area with bar b que pits, tables, running water, & trash cans.

I've never heard of this particular event but Chicot Park & Lake, on their own, are worth a checking out. While you are there, take the 7-8 mile trek into Ville Platte-THE SMOKED MEAT CAPITAL OF THE WORLD- & pick yourself up some of the BEST smoked sausage, pounce, gris-ads, boudin, etc you will ever taste.

I got a little more detail on the paddling.

There's a paddling trip planned, "Aprox 2/3 hours on the lake paddling trail, flat water through the woods."

I believe there is another event going on on the lake so there may be a shortage of canoes. However, most LHC people have their own and bring some for others to use.

It may be wise to bring your own kayak or canoe just to be sure.
