Thanks! I can't help it, but I love the entire process. I've already been scouting during the early mornings to figure some new areas out. It will all change once the water levels start dropping more and the acorns start falling, but I'm getting an idea of bedding areas, frequently used trails, access points and things like that. It gets hot pretty quickly though, so I'm in an out before lunch.

Correct. Also, as others have mentioned, most people on public land are good dudes just enjoying the outdoors as you are. The horror stories always get publicity but you don't hear that 99% of your encounters will be positive.

IMO, the real drama is found in duck hunting. That's a different world.

My scouting starts the day the season ends. It helps me learn the late season patterns I may have missed. Then I’ll scout a little bit each month to see when patterns change back to the early season. I scout heavily in September. I’ve only been hunting about 5 years so I’m all about learning as much as possible.

Man, this is a big question I just thought of until now that’s a huge one.

You shoot a deer, it runs onto private property. What do you do then?

I call the land owner. I look up who it is on OnX and then try to find contact info. I won’t go on their land without permission. When I’m hunting public, there’s very little chance of that happening because I’m pretty deep. If I’m on private, I know most of the nearby property owners.

Yea I would not go on it either without their permission. I have OnX and very familiar with the surrounding properties and who owns them, but how would you get in contact? Some of them are LLC’s and such

Revistiation once again.

I have OnX, but how would you get in contact with landowner in the event a deer ran on their property?

It gives address but no contact.

I need to do this, but it’s too damn hot for all that lol
You think their bedding areas change, or mostly stay the same? I’ve been hunting a little area for a couple years and I see a lot of deer, but they’re traveling to or from a food source on private land. They have to be bedding on the public, I just haven’t been able to locate that bedding area.
This is a spot I hunt at the very end of the season since I’m busy hunting other pieces of public the rest of the season. I’m wondering if they would be using the same bedding area right now, or just be bedding where ever since there’s much more cover this time of year.

As far as recovering a deer that runs onto private, I would do whatever I could to get in contact with the landowner. It’s usually not hard to find a game warden or biologist on public land, and they should be able to get in contact with the landowner if you can’t.

Update:

I have made some hunts since opening weekend. This thread has been very helpful in etiquette.

Have yet to see a deer though, still waiting on that part. In due time it’ll happen
