Kid-my parents raised chow chows in the 80's
once the male and female chows passed we had a
Yellow Lab: my dad made my mom give him away before he killed him. Chewed through 2x4's holding up the awning on the back patio and chewed through the main line for the AC not sure how the dog was still alive after that
Shar Pei-good dog with family, if he didn't know you it was not a good day
Bassett Hound: lazy stunk but was a good dog for 13 years. I believe if calculated, she was only awake for about 3 years out of the 13
Adult:
German Shepherd: she is 10 and is great family dog and watches my son like a hawk. She is not high strung like most GSD's and is pretty mellow but will play hard when she wants to. Sheds like crazy so the Roomba is a must.

I have had only 3 breeds.
Boxer that was 13
German Shepard that was 13
Still have a Pekingese that is 14.
New boxer that is 3.5 yrs.
New GS that is 1.5
After hunting behind GSP's I would love to get one, but I do not hunt enough to justify getting one. But, I love those dogs!

Childhood
Miniature Schnauzer - Great family dog. Lived to 16
Mutt 1 - good dog, got hit 2 times in one night and almost died. Dad ended up getting her fixed up. Lived to 14.
Lab mix - good dog. More my parents dog.
Adulthood
Wirehaired pointing Griffon - Fantastic dog. Got him as a puppy. He retrieves both marks and blind. Points for upland. Great nose. Sheds but not as much as labs. Energetic but not as much as a GSP. He can turn it on when he gets the signal but can calm down quickly when its time. He's an inside dog but has access to a doggy door.

Sorry to hear that. I had to put down my dachshund as well. He was a childhood pet. Unfortunately he got out of the yard while we were away from the house and when we got back we found him ripped open on the back porch possibly by a neighbor's dog. Poor guy made it through surgery but died right afterwards from a heart attack. Probably the saddest day of my life.

Currently have 2 patterdale terriers. They hate anything with fur or feathers. Good with people terrible with animals.

i didn't have any dogs growing up.
when i first met my wife we got a mini schnauzer and had him for 12 years. he didn't shed but would bark at anything that moved. We later had kids and he was ok with them, but as he got older he snipped at a couple of kids that were over to play.
currently we have a female golden doodle. She is a great dog but don't leave her alone for long. She will tear up stuff if she gets bored. The breed does not shed and is very loving. She follows me around like a shadow and will listen to me only. She disobeys the wife and kids some times. I'd get another one in a heart beat.

Shepard mix mutt-we adopted her from a shelter when she was a year old. She’s 5 now, but still has puppy energy. She weighs about 45 lbs., but barks above her weight class. She doesn’t like strangers and has to warm up to anyone besides my wife and I and family and friends that come over often. I think her 1 year on the mean streets made her this way. I really don’t care, though. No one would ever dare to break in our house when my wife is home alone or we’re gone. She sleeps like a human in the bed a lot of the time.
Wife’s chihuahua-I think it’s 8 years old. It used to hide from me, but now it likes me. Its breath smells like it eats it’s own crap, but I know it doesn’t because the dog mentioned above does. Thank heavens for Pedigree Dentastix. He won’t eat a bite unless the other one approaches his food bowl, then he goes ballastic and eats while growling and snarling at her.

Black Mouth Cur. Most naturally intelligent dog I have owned. Great watch dog, incredible natural desire to hunt, and an overwhelming desire to please. Not once in his lifetime did he have an accident in the house. We had a rabbit pen in our yard, and he would never mess with them, even when they ran around the yard. Always amazed me that he never messed with them. Easier to train than any dog I have owned or lived with. He died at the age of 7 about a year after Katrina from cancer. He had beaten it once before and didn't make it after the second time. First and only one of two times I've seen my dad cry. I will own another one one day because he was just an overall great dog.
Bluetick coonhound. Hard headed, loud, lots of energy, but incredible nose and prey drive. Very protective and wary of strangers. Had an intense hatred for horses, which ended up getting him stomped by a mule once. We hunted squirrels and coons over him. One time I shot a squirrel over him and for some reason he tried to eat it whole. I was young and started to really panic when he started choking. I swear my mom was elbow deep in this dog's mouth and pulled it out.
English Bulldog. Rescued her at about 5 months old. Lazy but absolutely awesome dog. Listen great, just did everything at her own speed (slow). She was extremely attached to me and one of the most loving dogs I had ever been around.
Plenty labs. All British. all have the on and off switch from the field to the house. Great around adults and kids. I have 3 right now and will own a lab at all times in my life. My oldest is now in his tenth season of hunting and still has incredible energy. He's done it all from ducks, doves, quail, and flushing rabbits when we didn't have access to beagles.

As a kid:
Black lab - female, great temperament, good retriever, lived to be 13. I was devastated when she passed.
As an adult:
Yellow lab - male, got him for my college graduation in 2007. He turns 12 in April and is still in good shape. Really good dog, rivals my childhood lab.
GSP - female, 5 years old. She was given to me by a friend who had to move out west for a great job. Hyper, but overall a good dog. She likes to escape the kennel, and will do so at all costs. Other than that, no issues.

As a kid:
Skye Terrier- Cool dog, even temperament. Never a problem.
Chihuahau - Total A-hole. Hated everyone but my mom. Bit every member of the family multiple times, including mom.
Doberman/German Shepherd Mix- Awesome dog! Easy temperament, would switch in and out of protection. Dude would play football with me.
As an adult:
Lhasa aspo- Smart dog, liked everyone. Would sit up in a chair like a human. High maintenance coat. Could say Roll Tide on command.
Shih tzu- Another cool dog. Fearless but pretty lazy. Coat could be a pain unless you just shaved her.
German Shepherd- My current dogs. Love everything about GSDs, but I understand now why some people should never own one. I have 3 right now. All are very high drive. There is no off switch with any of them. Rudy is the best temperament of the 3. Highly trainable, clear head. Wish I had had him when he was a puppy. No limit to what he could have been trained for. Banshee lives up to her name. Stunning physical abilities when she was younger. Uneven temperament. Would've been an awesome protection dog, but unpredictable as a family pet. Can be sweet one minute and just damn near evil the next. Karma, their offspring, is as physically gifted as Banshee but more stable mentally like her dad. Her only weaknesses are small children and she's a full velcro shepherd. Unbelievably smart and wicked fast. She's won multiple titles in agility and obedience. Trained in tracking as well.

English Mastiff - Based fricking dog. Saved my life when he was still a pup and I was younger. Was taking a shite with my front door unlocked and someone walked in in the middle of the day. He was there in the living room still a pup but over a 100 lbs. They tucked tail and ran out.
Mini Schnauzer - Super funny dog and smart as hell. Like to take sips of my beer.

As a kid.. mutts and an English setter..all the dogs were outside dogs and low maintenance but setter was very protective
As an adult.. labs, German shepherds, Rottweiler and rescue Pits, all on a large farm; German shepherds, two of them, both smart and wanted to please, stayed around the house loyally; labs, 2 again, were both goofy, liked to run, but weren’t the most obedient; Rott was a great dog as very loving, protective and barked a lot; Pits have been like soldiers for my family..first one was killed by a large boar after being let out of the house at 4am to pee. He and a large mutt must have smelled the hog ran after it and then the hog likely stopped and fought, gravely wounding the mutt and killing the pit. Best dog of my life and huge loss with game warden and vet coming to his funeral. New pit is very protective too but great with family and a lap dog that barks at any outdoor activity.

As a kid, had labs all of my life. I had a female that had 2 litters for a total of 17 puppies and we kept one of the males. Both great dogs.
Now, I have 2 Australian Shepherds. The older one is very protective. Both are very loyal and both are high energy. Very good with young children as well.

as a kid
lab - dumbest dog I've owned by far but the most loyal. and by dumb I mean clumsy and wouldn't listen
pitbull - would watch me like a hawk and not let anyone within 2 feet of me without getting in between. mom said she ran away with her boyfriend
collie - by far the best dog I had as a kid. smart. loyal. she would shed bad though.
adult
another pitbull mut. this one is up there with the collie in being smart. also very overprotective of my kids. hes 13 now and just sleeps most of the day unless someone is in the house or around my kids
boxer - high energy, lots of shedding, slobbers a lot and very clumsy. she jumped a 6 foot fence to chase the neighbors cat and got hit by a car. RIP Honey
wife has 2 yorkies. a fat and a skinny one. the skinny one is a real PITA. mean like a wasp. hates my pitbull. bites, barks at him, and made the mistake of nipping at one of my kids to get his snack. do not recommend this dog to anyone.
