If I remember correctly, Rick is originally from Ohio and got to Laffy with his first wife who was an engineer with marathon. They split when she got transferred to Houston and he wouldn’t leave.
Duck blind conversations can be interesting, found out a buddy that’s super low key was arrested for attempted murder one time.

I like to watch peoples faces when Clark comes in at night to go over the rules. They can't tell if he is serious or not.

Is Rick the old man that used to have the old S10, that hunts a blind in the marsh? And wears Delcambre Reeboks around the lodge? If so, best hunt I ever had was about 12 years ago with him.

Glad to hear some of you are aware of, or have even hunted, Lulu's marsh, and specifically Rick's former "mud hole". Was a special place I hunted many times, can still see a wad of green wings, or bunches and bunches of mallards and pins falling from insane heights down into that little hole, right in your face.
Taught me what calling prowess (at crazy volumes) CAN do in the right hands, given this was not a spot that ducks actually wanted to be, they had to be called to it. Bummer it wont be like that again with that combo of people and place, but I've got the memories and lots of pics from over the years.

Yes

Someone mentioned the new folks taking over the lodge wont have access to the marsh? Is that correct? I wonder who will be hunting the marsh?

That ear piercing modified MVP of Rick’s is the GOAT duck call.

That was my assumption based on backstory knowledge of the status of the marsh when Doug's was trying to hang on to it. It's dicey AF.
I heard that some of the family that (still) owns it made a few hunts last season per nearby source, but not 100% verified. As good as Rick's small hole was on that piece, he widely admitted it was far from the actual best spot that ducks actually wanted to go to. I hunted all of their blinds with exception of the very western/back blind.

yes, i never hunted the last blind either. All of my hunts on the marsh came during teal season, though. Never experienced the place during big duck season.

Last I heard the land owners were leasing blinds at a premium to private groups. I’m not sure if this is true or not, but some of the numbers people were claiming to be paying to lease those (now) shitty blinds was incredible.

One the best most knowledgeable hunters I’ve ever hunted with.
Pretty strong on woodcock too

No way. It’s good at being really loud which is all you need a lot of the time. It sounds more like a Main Street routine than a hunting call. Rick is a hell of a killer, and a wealth of knowledge, not a great caller though. Fred or Gabe were the best callers in that outfit.

Never hunted with Fred or Gabe, I’m unable to compare.

Seriously, really sorry to hear that. I made couple teal season hunts that were stellar in that marsh, sure, but I wish all could experience the scene there on the right days during the regular season. Special.
The way Rick could break insane high flights down into that little hole.....
Isaac's blind was arguably the "best," per Rick, given that's where the birds actually wanted to be when left undisturbed, though most of the others were really strong too.

Sounds like what i saw 10 yrs ago. Moved to deer hunting. Seeing that all about money and feeding now. At least duck hunting isnt about legal baiting.

I’ve been around Rick 4-5 times. Really good guy and hunter.

Have gotten to know him over the years through various avenues and interactions in addition to a number of hunts. He's a flat out duck killer, and many who didn't take doing so quite as seriously as he does at times butted heads with him in the blind.
But for those that were there to kill ducks up close like they should be, and were willing to listen to the source that knew the hole better than they did on what was the best way to do that, they enjoyed stellar hunts.
I'll miss being in that place with all those that made Doug's what it was; it'll likely never be back despite early hopes of keeping it going by a few key staff.
