On the subject on what gun, choke and shells to use.
We've always looked at dove season like a competition. We use the lowest dram smallest BB shells with full chokes in whatever gun you chose. We pride ourselves on the wing shot. We kill enough for dove bombs on the grill after the hunt.

I love the dove hunting threads. A couple of years ago I asked about hearing protection and found out that it's gay.
I usually buy whatever #8s are cheapest. My brother and I get pretty competitive about our hit %s so I'm picky about my shots. I'd rather kill 3 with 4 shots than 15 with 50.

It depends on how the birds are flying. I’ve got a few holes where they decoy right in and it doesn’t take many shots to knock down a limit. Then I’ve got other spots where it’s a little way more difficult.
We had some birds last year.

Any hearing or sight protection is gay... I have an excuse why I ignore the wife and kids now...
We have 2 categories
1) most birds.... we stop at 15 of course... So its first to 15
2) most boxes shot

Personally I only take 16 shells in the field with me in case I drop one....
What's the personal best shot to dove ratio anyone has? I killed 16 with 21 shells about 30 years ago on a field in north Alabama. Hit a Dutch double on the 15th bird which put me one over the limit.
I've limited out several times in New Mexico with less than a full box of shells. That was always decoying birds alone or with a couple of folks and involved at least one if not a couple of 2-3 Dutch doubles. 2 spinners on 2 10 foot pieces of 1/2" emt in the desert next to any water - all it takes is a truck rut with any water at all in it for more than a day or so... is incredible....hitting them is not the problem, waiting until they are far enough away that you can hit them in that situation takes some patience. You'd think setting up away from the decoys would help but they come in fast and twisting and diving until they are about 10 yards from the decoys when they settle in for a landing....damn near impossible to hit them until they are flying away from the decoys. Most of the time I'd have a little over 2 shells for each bird. I would go 4-6 evenings a week but people who went with me a couple of times a season would need 3-4 boxes to hit those damned birds....they act a fool until they are about 5-10 yards from the decoys.
I havent used anything but the same CItori for about 35 years. Not having a third shot has made my wing shooting much better than it was when I shot pump guns and auto loaders. On a normal dove field pass shooting I can usually limit out with less than 2 boxes. Have only done it the one time with less than a box of shells without decoys.

The amount of birds in South Texas last year was unreal. Seems we could've shot 1000 in a single day. We started only taking longer and longer-range shots to see who could hit them the farthest, just to make it challenging.

We only have one challenge on my annual South Texas dove hunt with about 20 of my buddies. Shoot the bird, catch it before it hits the ground. Everyone pays into the pot. If no one does it, the pot rolls over to next year.
I did it two years ago. First time anyone had done it it four years. Paid for my trip.

Texas is BLESSED with dove shooting. I have a place on Galveston I can hunt if I am there, one near New Braunfels I will get to shoot the weekend of the UGA / Texas game and 4 sections close to Lubbock that I could shoot if I were in the area....that area around Lubbock will melt a gun LOL. All of them are fantastic even when they are not as good as they can be. It is sooooooo much better than our field here in Georgia. We will have about 10 of us Sunday on 81 acres with about 15 properly prepared. We shoot it the day after the opener because we all have somewhere else we can shoot on the opener. Abou 75% will limit out. It'll be a week at best before it recovers. It will be really good late in first split if we get some weather and is always really good late in the year but it is NEVER as good as a bad day in what I have experienced in Texas. New Mexico was even better only because there is an almost limiltless amount of area to hunt and no one around....but those fields I have access to in Texas are incredible, just too far away LOL....

The season opener the year I turned 14 I drove myself nearly 50 miles from Atlanta to a pay shoot in Adairsville, Georgia. I was alone. Season opened at noon and I got there about 11...I did not know any better. The place was PACKED. I paid my money, $20 if think, and asked where I was supposed to go. Lady taking the money told me anywhere that was open. I wound up along a fence row with single and double shooters every 20 yards or so for about 1000 yards in either direction....almost right in the middle. When the shooting started I realized that by the time any birds came near me from either direction they were going to be very well versed in shotguns and shooting. About 1 a lone bird entered that field to my right and at least 30 people shot at it and missed....it was my turn. I shouldered my gun, had no idea what I was doing. That bird was, by the time it got to me, doing everything but flying upside down and backwards...he had obviously been hired by federal and winchester to drive up profits for the quarter. I only remember pointing in the general direction and shooting. Damned thing folded up graveyard dead....and started falling....right into my hands. A 14 year old kid, surrounded by grown men, many who had shot 2 and 3 times at that bird, and I fold it up and catch it without moving! Not an inch. Gun in left hand, bird in the right. I looked up and down that fence row and the shock on the faces of the other people was very noticeable. I did not say a word, they didn't either. I picked my shite up and walked to another spot about a half mile away! I left them thinking that it was par for the course for me....and proceeded to shoot 3 boxes of shells without cutting a feather! Had a helluva time though....
