The two extremes in this thread are disturbing...

I hope you get caught. It will not be pretty. I also hope you lose all your teeth but one, and may it have a terrible toothache.
Get caught for what? If the dog is continuously trespassing on private property, the cops will be more likely to start looking at you instead of him if he has given you multiple chances to keep your dog off his property.
Good owners keep their dogs controlled, an accident or two may happen, but a dog continuously trespassing goes beyond that.

Certainly a few on the fringes but there's multiple reasonable people who are getting lumped in either category.
I have never and will never shoot a dog, but lots of people are here acting like deer are unaffected by them. Probably more than a couple of those people shoot every single coyote and bobcat they see.

Why didn't you capture it, feed it, and nurse it back to health. Surely, it was someone's pet.

Dog owner is guilty of trespassing and can get fined for it.
All the shooter has to say is it was charging him and the cops won't care. Happens a lot, people need to control their animals.
I'm not a hunter and a big dog lover. I wouldn't do it personally, but those are the facts and they happen all too often.

Shoot first and ask questions later. Amirite?

A myriad of different reasons. The main ones being there was no collar and my wife, who is a veterinarian, suggested putting it down.

In Tenn, it's a class C mis fine only penalty. May be different where you are from... Class B if damages occur. Goes up from there with injuries.

Not for me, I don't think I could shoot a dog. Closest I came was when me and a neighbor were trying to get animal control take a stray aggressive dog that about attacked us. I tried to get it rescued but it about bit me, the neighbor, and the rescue group person. Had to call animal control. They had to call for additional assistance.

Variances in state laws have been an issue in multiple OB continuous threads.
TX
2) without the owner's effective consent, kills, administers poison to, or causes serious bodily injury to an animal;
An offense under Subsection (b)(1), (2), (7), or (8) is a state jail felony
It is a defense to prosecution under this section that:
(1) the actor had a reasonable fear of bodily injury to the actor or to another person by a dangerous wild animal as defined by Section 822.101, Health and Safety Code; or
(2) the actor was engaged in bona fide experimentation for scientific research.(e)
It is a defense to prosecution under Subsection (b)(2) or (6) that:
(1) the animal was discovered on the person's property in the act of or after injuring or killing the person's livestock animals or damaging the person's crops and that the person killed or injured the animal at the time of this discovery;or
(2) the person killed or injured the animal within the scope of the person's employment as a public servant or in furtherance of activities or operations associated with electricity transmission or distribution, electricity generation or operations associated with the generation of electricity, or natural gas delivery.
(f) It is an exception to the application of this section that the conduct engaged in by the actor is a generally accepted and otherwise lawful:
(1) form of conduct occurring solely for the purpose of or in support of:
(A) fishing, hunting, or trapping; or
(B) wildlife management, wildlife or depredation control, or shooting preserve practices as regulated by state and federal law; or
Sec. 822.041. DEFINITIONS. In this subchapter:
(2) "Dangerous dog" means a dog that:
(A) makes an unprovoked attack on a person that causes bodily injury and occurs in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept and that was reasonably certain to prevent the dog from leaving the enclosure on its own; or
(B) commits unprovoked acts in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept and that was reasonably certain to prevent the dog from leaving the enclosure on its own and those acts cause a person to reasonably believe that the dog will attack and cause bodily injury to that person.
So reasonable defense includes that the dog was on your property chasing or injuring your livestock, causing predation on native species, damaging your crops, or was involved in presenting potential bodily harm.
Fairly easy to set up a defense if you are not an idiot. That being said it is much easier to dispose of the body immediately and permanently and then keep your trap shut.

ive learned one thing about confronting dog owners about their canine at large. If the dog shows up wounded or turns up missing, you better be ready to have the finger pointed at you... Or in the case of one acquaintance, a 30-30 rifle pointed at him.
