I believe that a gun that is properly stored (in a holster with trigger guard covered) is "safe," even with one in the pipe. To add another cliche to the list, I believe there are no accidental discharges, only negligent discharges. Some people see carrying a gun chambered, safety off like running around with a grenade with the pin pulled, but it's really not if you are proficient with your weapon, which you should be before you ever carry.
Ideally, you are right, but shite happens. Have you ever had this happen?
(I know, I know, ANOTHER analogy
Whether it's accidental or negligent, all it takes is one lapse in judgement/attention. There are plenty of people who are proficient with their weapons that just make a mistake. I talked to an NRA instructor who has won multiple championships and teaches gun safety. He said he has been disqualified 4 times for improper gun handling (He's been competing since the 1980's). No one is perfect including myself. So if I momentarily risk my personal safety for the safety of those around me by not chambering my gun, so be it.
I repeat, I have drawn my gun in self defense twice and had plenty of time to chamber a round. It also let them know that I meant business.

My Glock 27 is in a plasic holster that snaps the gun in. I could hand that thing to my 6 year old and no matter what he did he would be unble to remove it (not enough arm strength.) For that gun, in that holster, I consider it safe. I still keep it hidden...

I also see the reasoning here. It's all what makes you feel comfortable. When I first started carrying, I carried chambered, safety on. Now, I actually feel more comfortable carrying safety off with a round chambered. The important thing is that if you are putting another step in between you and a live round, you owe it to yourself to practice executing those steps so that you can do them as fast as possible.
This is a good discussion, and know that I'm not trying to change your mind on anything. Your safety is up to you, as is mine. But I think we all benefit from hearing other schools of thought.
Just out of curiosity though, did the NRA instructor say whether or not he carries with a round chambered?
Posted on 3/27/12 at 3:45 pm to CaptSpaulding
My buddies carry theirs without one in the chamber. I have a revolver so that is that

I like PJ. Just think Nirvana is extremely overrated.

Personally I'd never carry a gun unchambered. When it hits the fan, its going to happen fast and the one second it takes to rack the slide could mean life or death. Also, if you're engaged with someone you might only have one hand free or one hand injured, making it harder to chamber a round (although possible with training).

Cocked and locked. One in the barrel of course.

Pearl Jam is the shiz. As for Nirvana, I'll give them respect for bringing West Coast grunge to the mainstream music media. Say what you want, but they changed the industry. I'm not a huge fan, but will listen to them occasionally.
