I took the course many moons ago, but I don't know about the prior military. I would hope that is the case. Phone numbers and more info for AL can be found here:

Phone Numbers and More Info for AL

Tell me where in you are (if in the Central AL area). I might be able to send you to some places I know of personally.

I had to relocate for a job to Boaz, AL. I work in Guntersville. I know central AL very well though. I have family in Clanton, Prattville, and Hoover.

I guess I'm heading to Dick's tomorrow. Don't take that and run please. Thats just for the gear. A guy that owns a gun store not too far from me said he had a 270 brand new with a baked cherry wood frame. Scope. Supposed to be pretty sweet. Any thoughts on that?

Make of gun? SHould be good either way. If you don't have cold weather boots, you may want to get some. I use Lacrosse knee boots with 800-1000 thinsulate. Very nice and affordable.

Most of hunting is about the company, so just relax and have a good time.

He probably told me, but I forgot. He just said to swing by Monday and he would help me pick out a rifle. I think he described that one because it was a brand new model and had just come in or something.

Not this shite again. Just link him to the original "I'm going hunting, but don't know how" thread.

If you want to impress him, own up to the fact that you don't know shite from shinola about hunting, but you'd love for him to teach you. If you try to fake your way through it, they're gonna know in five minutes. Then you're gonna look like a jackass.

If you don't want to go then say so.. It would be the same as you playing golf every weekend and asking them to go.. You don't need to go out and buy a gun unless this is something you really want to get into.. Just use one of their guns.. I'd think if they know your not a avid hunter that you don't have a gun.. I myself love guns and love duck hunting more than anything i'v ever done but it's not for everyone.. If I invited someone that's never been I'd tell them to use one of my guns untell they figure out if they like it or not..

I know. It's a pride thing. As far as gear, it's all about my comfort. As far as the weapon, I'm pretty good with that sort of thing. When it comes to trying to apply all of it, I'm sure I'll give him a call for some advice. However, with my job, and his, it's not like we can get together this week and go over some stuff. The trip is next Friday, Saturday. I'm not out to impress, and I'm not going to reach and make myself out to be a jackass. I'm already just looking to get a "feel" for the environment and the idea. Haven't even thought about the deer.

Yeah I know. But it's complicated. You should have seen my fiance's face light up when her dad asked. Like I said, my fiance' wants us to find some kind of common ground. They won't touch a golf course, ocean, or airplane. So it's kinda up to me to make the effort here.

As far as the rifle issue. I don't think they have one I can just borrow. IDK.

Might want to get over that. You said you like to surf. If I went and bought a surf board and gear and waded out in the great blue with you, it would be totally obvious to you that I had no idea what was up, right? Relax and have a good time. It's really not about the hunting, bro. Really. Ask advice and listen to what those ole blue collar guys are saying. You may frick up and enjoy it!

Well then they aren't very good hunters then! Might just not trust you with their rifles?

I'm going to try to have fun and just enjoy the scenery. I gotta admit, patience is not one of virtues. The prospect of waiting in a thicket or tree for 5-6 hours is not a comforting thought. But I'm gonna give this a shot.

I made her grandfather crack up and he promised to show me the ropes. He told me on the porch "we're going to make a hunter and a man out of you."

I told him "I get the hunter part, but as far as being a man, you need to try surfing. Out in the middle of the ocean where you are the hunted and no rifle."

They all said "screw that."
