FunkyTiger,
I don't know what a "Mossberg Mini" is, but I've bought 2 Mossberg Bantam shotguns in 20 gauge. They've been fine guns. One was bought as a home defense for my daughter. My daughter did not like shooting larger shotguns, like a full size Remington 1100 or full size Mossberg pump 12 gauge, but she liked the Bantam. The weapon documented to have the best chance of putting a quick end to an encounter is the 12 gauge shotgun; the 20 also does well and wound be a good consideration for recoil sensitive or smaller folks (like your wife). You can buy a reliable pump shotgun w/o breaking the piggy bank. The newest Mossberg cost $240, brand new. You can get a very serviceable and reliable home defense shotgun without having the newest, 20 round shotgun comlete w/ tactiacl stock, laser range finder, red dot sight, collapsible stock, flashlight, etc.
Some good info here:

ETA: The Mossberg Bantam model is one of their "youth model" versions. It has a shorter barrel, shorter/altered stock to improve handling for smaller stature folks.
