If your relatives oppose shooting (they're lefties, huh):
Hot spice suet....mammals can't handle the heat (with a few exceptions). I grow habaneros (red savita, orange lantern, chocolate, etc.) and chilis, its a great way to suprise unwanted guests.

Live traps are the best answer. In my experience its better to Camo the trap with stuff from around the yard. Use leaves and grass to cover the floor so the wire isn't exposed. Cover with small branches and leaves. You can bait suburban coins with anything edible. I've had good luck with pizza crust. Peanut butter/honey should work great as well. If they are going to release it make sure they drive VERY far away. It's really just better to kill it. The population is exploding and needs to be contained.

Agree w/ the suggestions to get a live trap. I've heard that combinatons of dog food, corn and peanut butter work well. Had not heard of itbeing illegal in LA to relocate a nuisance coon. I'll need to check into that further. Some folks recommend putting aluminum foil on the food tray, under the food. Coons are very curious and are attracted by bright objects.
