I always found it fascinating that the reason that show shut down was bc he successfully caught every single river monster on planet earth. There was literally nothing else for them to film.

Talk about a true fisherman’s dream bucket list. He is probably one of the only people ever that has accomplished catching every major game fish from around the world like that. Maybe some rich folks that no one has ever heard of have done something like that but most people don’t have the means to do it.

First episode I watched he hooked into a freshwater ray the size of a small swimming pool. Took him hours to get it off the bottom and it starting giving birth when he landed it. I was hooked...pun intended.

I liked that he was down to earth in his approach. Many shows would find him sitting on a river bank in old jeans, a t-shirt with holes in it with his rod and reel and I could relate to that.

He could have been any guy fishing and not some stud with the $80K bass boat, shirt with 30 sponsor patches applied to it and using thousands of dollars of electronic equipment to try to locate the fish.

Now, he did have a vast array of rods, reels and a huge amount of tackle he used on his show, but that was about as fancy as he got.

I have little doubt that I had a bull shark hooked once when fishing in the Mississippi River near the Industrial Canal behind the old Holy Cross School.

I had baited a big circle hook with a perch about the size of my hand and tossed it out into the river. I had some homemade rod holders that had a spike about 1 ft. long pounded into the ground so I could be hands free with 3 setups.

One of my rods got a bump then damn near bent in a semi-circle and the drag was letting line out like it never had before. I picked up the rod, tightened the drag a bit and went to set the hook and had a good fight for about 10 seconds before the line went limp. I reeled it in and the perch on the line was bit clean in 2 as if someone took a knife to it.

I've fished that river all my life and have never had that happen before.

My son was young when this show came out and he loved it. Every time I’d bring him fishing and he’d set the hook, he’d yell “fish on” in a Jeremy Wade accent.

That ray coming to the surface was truly shocking. Just a holy shite moment.

It really was. I had no idea that a giant freshwater ray even existed. A 600 plus pound ray in a river was mind blowing.

Dude has shown some incredible stuff

Definitely the goat. My favorite is the Muskie episode, week long nothing. He goes and gets blessed the natives, and it testing something out to catch live bait or something, definitely not a Muskie lure abs catches a big one right after the blessing.

He leaves no stone unturned

I liked all the history and local lore that went into each episode.
