Kids in the family use pool noodles. They got all serious a couple of years back and started tracking success rates with all their bait. Slim Jim's have been the clear winner.

I like lightly browned hot dogs marinated in a lot of garlic power.

+1. I go to walmart and get two $0.99 pack of hot dogs, a jar of minced garlic and a jar of their worcestershire sauce. Cut them into bait sized pieces and put them into a ziplok.

Only issue I have found is that it also seems to catch a lot of turtles which are a colossal PITA.

Best beat his life bream or perch. Allegedly, goldfish work well too. Cut shadow cut bait is always my second option, with 2 day old beef heart my third.

Do you want the bait to sit high in the water column and not near the bottom. The lower you said the beat, the more likely you will end up with gar. My terminal line to the beat is 100 pound or better braid. I use circle or live bait hooks and set a small split shot 12 inches above. I drop blind is nylon string. I’ll make my own drop weight from 16 ounce red solo cups and quickcrete. Takes half a day to make 30 from start to finish, including cure time.

I feel like where you set the bait in the water column makes a huge difference. Maybe just as much as what type of bait. Last time I set jugs, my bait was too low and the crabs got to it. Not next time crabs!

I do a lot of bowfishing. We use to use live bait trying to target flatheads but we decided to try common carp as cutbait and hit the jackpot on channel cats. No, they aren't as good as a flathead, but its a lot of fun catching bait now.

I am about to make some noodles to try and catch catfish. What size circle hooks are you using? The no. 3 hooks look just a little small and I can't find a large pack of the no. 4 hooks.

I use mostly no.4 hooks. I believe I ordered a pack of 100 on amazon a year ago.

Liver works well if you put it in a piece of panty hose. I find chicken hearts work better than gizzards

I usually put 2 hooks on mine. One about 2-3 feet deep and other a couple feet from bottom. Cut mullet works well for me. Caught an 82 lb blue cat last year on one

the eyes of the hooks i used were to small for me to slip through the string for the anchor and to tie them back to the land. So i made a small leader made out of 30 lb test off of the sting to the hook. we set them out Saturday morning and checked them Sunday morning. all four were missing the hook and nothing else. We used cooked hot dogs marinated with garlic.

So did we have 4 really big fish break each one off or did someone mess with them?

Were they twisted up? I normally set about 30 or 40 jugs with 150 lb twine and usually 5 or 6 are missing hooks when I pick them up.
