My lab is treated like a member of our family, and she knows it too. She is 5 now, and I don't know what I would do if I lost her like that. I do not risk bringing her on hunts when I think she will be put in dangerous situations. Even when I think I'm not putting her in harms way I have to remember that she is a dog, and things can happen sometimes. She literally stepped right over a 3 and 1/2 ft cottonmouth this past Saturday. I was right behind her and almost stepped on the same snake. Luckily it was still cool enough that the snake was very slow, and did not try to strike at either of us. We were about an hour long kayak from the truck and another 30 minutes from a hospital or vet. It could have been a terrible situation either way.

I LOVE my dogs. But I'm not making my daughter fatherless

Thank you for posting your story. I know it must have been hard for you. The reason I asked for your story was because a friend of mine lost a lab to gator. He took some idiots teal hunting and told them to only shoot in front of them and the idiots shot a teal behind them in the canal. Instinctively his dog set out to retrieve the duck. He said all he saw was a splash and his dog was gone. It’s been 10 years and he has not gotten over it. He has never spoken to that idiot again. What is really bad is they were about to leave because they had their limits. Til this day he still shakes his head why did that Stupid MF even shoot.

Thanks guys, appreciate the concerns. Wish I could figure out how to post a pic. To address a few of the common comments. The gator officially measured 8’2”. I did not cut him open but it was obviously the same one. There are a lot of camps where I’m at, let’s just say there were a bunch of white logs floating in the marsh. It happened so fast if I’d had a gun in my hand I don’t know if I could’ve done anything about it. I’m a duck hunter, haven’t shot anything a dog hasn’t picked up in 15+ years. Cried in the duck blind opening day that year. Cried typing that story. It’s all good now, nothing but great memories except that one. I don’t mind crying over my girl. If a dude can’t or won’t cry over his dog, daughter or momma, he’s not my kind of guy.

So sorry man. I'd rather have my boat stolen 5x than have this done to my dog.

I hate gators. All I will say is, my Ruger 22 is a wonderful auto.

Umm. Am upvote doesn't mean people like the story or the outcome.
People upvote when bad things happen as a sign of respect.
Don't be weird

Sorry for your loss, OP, but that wasn't your fault. Thanks for posting your story. As the other poster said, I can't imagine how difficult it is re-living that. It's a helpful reminder to the rest of us that you can never be too careful. I almost lost my golden last season because she got impaled by a cane in her gut, and I still think about what I would've done if I actually would've lost her. It was partly due to complacency on my part and lack of awareness of my surroundings. I posted about it here because I hoped it would serve as a warning to other hunters.
Thanks again, and glad to hear you got the gator.

Too much of the marsh is used for egg harvesting now, and they aren’t hunting the gators. It’s a problem.

Folks don’t realize how dangerous coyotes are to small pets. I hate coyotes! I usually take care of everyone I see.

In a week I could put 20 over 8’ without trying. They don’t hunt our property or next to us, Courville gets the eggs.
