Gators have been a nuisance for years. No need to exterminate them, but it’s time to thin them out. Not enough hunters/trappers to keep them in check IMO.

I was hunting south of 717 in the marsh one year on a warm opening day. A speck circled 5-6x broke a wing and he glided 100 yds. Sent the dog, soon after she entered the water, had a 6'+ launch off the bank and beat her to the speck, they had quite the tug of war for a few minutes, before she got the goose. Was terrifying. Had a friend walking his lab down a drainage canal and she went to the bank, and a big one lunged and got her like in the African nat geo movies. I've been seeing them most every hunt this year, but have been using the dog. My sad story is I killed a dog 5 years ago due to hunting dog hypoglycemia.

been around bird dawgs a lot for over 40 years now.. and I love em more than plenty people out there and the crazy shite that can happen to them on hunts or in training never ceases to surprise me.

most of the verifiable alligator attacks on dogs I am aware of are around or in immediate vicinity of camps.. not out and the blind... snakebite, barb wire, beaver cuttings.. trapped beaver, trapped nutria, run over by boats.... years ago at eddi pintos a guy cranked up his boat while it was still on trailer and another guys dog ran right into the prop - never want to see that again.... ad bees to the list too.. and Bees.. yes bees.. heck.. every year I hear of 2-3 dawgs accidentally getting shot on hunts...

That's why I don't teal hunt. When I cut brush around the lake I make sure my dog stays within in eye range. Some of the places I cut is gator country. Hell one year during duck season a 5 footer comes swimming thru the decoys. Had visions of the same thing happening and thought about what would I do.

was also on one where a lab was shot at a range of about 10'. that one was not mine, but has led to me yelling at people to unload guns multiple times. I think I have PTSD from that one

I don’t know what alligators are like in the desert.

But in Louisiana,an 8 foot gator will kill you.

Sometimes, like in the case of OP, Darwin gets it completely fricking wrong.

Most of the time, he doesn’t.

Do me a favor, make sure to get video of attempt 1 out of 10.

I heard (this year) there wasn't enough money.

Regardless, they're overpopulated now. Fish late summer on the coast (well, Dularge anyway) and the little bastards harass the shite out of you. Not saying we need to wage Jihad on them, but they definitely need better population control. Just like any other varmint

Man, that is so sad. It doesn't sounds like you had any options unfortunately.

Tiger, you are spot on. I’m in Dularge also and the amount of alligators that associate people with food is ridiculous. Not just 4 footers anymore either.

There’s been a bunch of tags left on the table the last two years in my area due to low hide prices.

Losing a lab to a gator has always been a fear of mine. I make sure to put a few shells of buck shot or slugs in my front shirt pocket whenever I hunt in the marsh just in case I ever get put in one of those situations. Not really sure if I could get in trouble for that with the green jeans, but I really don't care.

Sorry for your loss

Nine years ago, almost to the day, had a 9-10ft gator across the canal from a picnic I was having behind the house. He sat there sunning the entire day watching my GF and new American bulldog pup.

I kept an eye on him throughout the day and he didn't move. Looked over and he was gone. Ran to my SUV and grabbed my pistol. And walked up to our side of the canal. Sure enough, he was halfway up the bank. Rather than run to water, he froze and tried to look invisible. I put half a mag into his head.

I don't trust them. And I don't spare them. I called the game warden and they came and collected it.

The old joke is there is nothing an alligator loves more than a dog, except a... Person of color. The game warden who came out there was a black guy, and he was not a fan of gators either.

Looking back, I wouldn't jump in the water with an 8ft gator alone. 6ft and other guys used to dealing with them around, that's different.

Prayers for you and your family. Terrible story. You'll never be able to un-see that I'm sure. So sorry for your loss.

Getting in the water after an alligator of any size is a mistake. People are helpless in the water.

I love dogs and maybe if I was single and younger I would. I’m older and have young kids, no way my kids are losing their dad b/c of an alligator over a dog. It’s not worth it, and without a doubt, 100%, you wouldn’t have done shite either.

ETA: We use to swim some in a bayou with gators at night but there were usually anywhere from 10-20 or so people out there. By myself, thinking more about it, even if I was younger I doubt I’d have risked it, even over a dog. Only way I would have is if someone was with me and could take me to a hospital or call for help.

yeah besides the point that they have advantages with swimming, underwater vision, maneuverability...unless you have a weapon on you, what the hell are you going to do to him? choke hold? poke his eyes out?
