Interesting.
Ill tell yall one thing that is 100% certain. If someone can find a cure for this stuff on their own time and own dime (no entities claiming it), they will be an instant millionaire.

The coldish winter we had a few yrs back helped some didn't it?
We had 3 straight days where it stayed below freezing and got down in the teens each night. It knocked it's dick in the dirt for that following spring. Unfortunately, by late fall it was back and the following warm winter had us back to square one.

I propose outfitting a barge of some type with an incinerator. Put parish trustee inmates on it with big nets and have them scoop and burn from daylight to dark. We get 2 to 3 rigs and run 365 days a year. Cheap labor and you stay on top of the problem.

They are going to have to put money into this lake or it will be gone.

Maybe they need to have a salvinia tournament instead of a bass tournament. Have a dumpster at the weigh in site to haul it off to be burned.....I hear that a burn chamber will soon be available.

I didnt even think about using that big bastard for salvinia.
Funny you say that about the salvinia tournament. The citizen formed "lake alliance" actually threw out the idea of people bringing it in and getting paid by the pound or something like that.

Oh the genius ideas of the locals. Have you seen the "front end loader" pontoon boat or the floating mulcher? A true waste of time.

It is interesting to see what people are capable of in that regard but until they come up with a way to fight it "genetically", the lawnmower is just a redneck hobby.

I want to find a way to harness that stuff for bio fuel. Harvest it, and move on to the next lake, return when it grows back, then harvest again. The good news is I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about in that arena, so science should beat me to the punch on an herbicide by at least 30 years.

I actually think you are onto something here...

My luck, gear up to harvest and make fule and a huge week-long freeze comes along and kills it ALL.

I think it's going to take tree removal before anything can work. The lake can't flush itself out because the trees are too thick and they can't get the spray boats in to get it all. The state only owns a 50% undivided interest in the lake bottom so it could be tricky to get the other owners on board.

This is your expert area. About how many trees or what size areas/area of trees do you think would need to go for it to be very effective?

At my parents place in Ponchatoula we had a serious salvinia problem on about a 9 acre pond. We ended up draining the pond, and spraying every two weeks. Got it under control after about a year, but have to knock out spots every once in awhile.

You'd need trees no closer than 20-30 feet to operate. It would be a tough pill to swallow for the general public and take years to complete.

The amount of work would be staggering. It would be quite a sight to see that many trees taken for Bistineau. Crazy to think that it is starting to come to that type of discussion.

Heartbreaking stuff. Grew up on the lake fishing and skiing. At this point, in the interest of my son and future generations being able to enjoy it like I did, I'd rather they drain it, close it to the public and log it or do whatever they need to do.
