First handgun?

Go to a range with several demos & check out as many pistols as possible. Maybe go a few times/ Make sure the weapon is right for you.

Bare minimum, go with at least .380

But I have no clue where to start.

Some folks may disagree with this advice, but I'm going to throw it out there, anyway:

If I were a handgun novice, I would start with a .22, for low-recoil acquisition of fundamentals, and for cheap practice.

While you’re getting comfortable with the essentials of safe handling & marksmanship, you can do more research on which centerfire you want.
And it gives you an excuse to buy TWO guns.

Some (not all) decent brands, in no particular order:
-- Colt
-- Springfield
-- Ruger
-- Glock
-- Beretta
-- Browning

Good luck

I was shooting a .22 pistol a couple months ago, that was a fun little gun.

.22's are fun and cheap if all you're looking for is a plinking gun.

That's actually solid advice, they just don't make great home defense weapons.

NOPE.

Rugers are terrific.

They are uncomplicated, practically bombproof, and relatively inexpensive.

And (in my experience, at least) they are accurate and utterly reliable.

I love ‘em.

I think the beretta M9 is a good pistol for the first one if you want a semi-auto. I suggest getting a 9mm because it is pretty much the cheapest thing to shoot that isn't a .22

Go to the range and rent weapons by different manufacturers and in different calibers. Don't listen to fanboys of either gun makers OR round fan boys. It's YOUR pistol. Buy and shoot what feels right to YOU.

Agreed, try them out. I love both my Glock and my XD.

To OP and Geauxt:If you can find a good condition G19 for about $375-$400 I would jump on it...But ya better beat me to it.

And Geauxt, if you can get that kinda price on one in good condition let me know. I may be headed up there sooner than I thought.

The gen3 G19 is in fairly high demand right now because of several reasons, but the main three are the fact that it is cheap 9mm, more people are going to smaller handguns, and Glock isn't making the Gen 3 anymore (and they don't like the Gen 4). I personally haven't shot the 4.

I'm looking probably in the $300-$450 range, can I get a decent starter pistol for this much?
You can get a lower level Sig in that range at Academy. You won't find a better pistol in that range.

I got a Glock 22 (.40) for my first gun. I love that gun. It is fool proof and will always fire/never hang up on you. But the lack of safeties is a concern (see the video of the moron who shot himself in the leg posted a few weeks ago). I got a Springfield XD 45acp about a year ago (wanted a good safety now that I have kids) and have been very satisfied with it. Save up a few extra $ and invest in a decent model. there is nothing more frustrating than shooting a pistol that continuously gets hung up

And my wife has a snub nose .38 that she can shoot the heck out of. I just wish I had gotten the hammerless .38. Taurus makes an Ultralight .38 that is light weight and easy to manage for the little lady.

The lack of safeties on the glock is my concern as well.

Springfield XD comes in a model with a thumb safety (along with the grip and trigger safety). Not all of them have it so check for it.

Wasn't that a 1911 and his thumb disengaged the safety?

BTW, I agree with you, but wait until the Glock-knights show up and start throwing around the word, external

If you need a safety switch to be safe, you shouldn't be buying a pistol yet.

Meh. I like the thumb safety on my PX4. Not so much for me, but the people around me.

Like the above post stated. Not for me but others around me. I know how to handle a gun safely.
