United States:
10,317 employees
146 facilities in 33 states
frick that. i want to work all my own damn land.
I agree though. Part of the whole problem are these 'monopoly' farms.

They are largly responsible for the crazy yields those big farms are getting though.
Posted on 11/11/12 at 5:05 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
true. however, they have a lot more play in potential price manipulating I would think.

They have alot of pull on it from what I've read.
I've read a few micheal polland books. Good shite.

If it weren't for the farmers where would we get our deer corn from?

I agree with this. America has a bit of a problem with monopolistic and oligopolistic markets with firms that have a little too much power in setting the market price, IMO. It's not capitalistic.

All the farmers went to dinner at Ruth's Chris. They'll be back later.

the future of US agriculture
quote:
According to the EPA, 3,000 acres of productive U.S. farmland are lost to development every day.
Between 1974 and 2002, the number of corporate-owned U.S. farms increased by more than 46 percent.
In the US, the average principal farm operator is 55.3 years old.
Between 2005 and 2006, the US lost 8,900 farms (a little more than 1 farm per hour)
quote:Yep. I don't think subsidies would even be in the picture if those farms weren't as powerful. luckily, the rice industry isn't quite hit by those as the corn/beef industry

Dude I'm eating Pizza Hut tonight. Pizza, Boardwalk Empire, and Homeland are Sunday traditions. And no, subsidies were not reason I have premium cable. I'd have those regardless.

It's about 3-6% for our farm depending on what happens through the year.
earlier in this thread, all the farmers were acting like they would all fail if they did not receive the subsidy.
If all you get is 3%, it seems that a little fat trimming could remove the need for the subsidy. A 3% improved efficiency should not be hard.
ETA: sorry if this has already been addressed, I just ran 12 miles because I'm a badass. :)

I got this shite.
If it's not all farmers, just 'those scummy ones' bleeding our tax dollars, why do they vote for liberals who promise them more just like welfare queens do? And all the YEW DON'T UNDERSTAND IF YOU AIN'T BEEN A FARMER bullshite sounds exactly like half the rap songs I've ever endured talking about the hood and justifying why they deserve to get paid. Because 'you wouldn't understand'.

I came in late to both threads, and I never said this. And I've said throughout and in previous threads that we can make the cuts. I don't see how we could improve efficiency. It's too volatile to show a definitive 3% increase of efficiency. But a 3% cut is doable.

Pump the brakes, man. Farm subsidies are like .003% of the national budget.
