[insert dropshot joke]
Caught them on dropshot, carolina rig and 6XD. I caught a large mouth, a spot, a white and a catfish on a 6xd. I stared at this all day on Saturday.
For dropshoting I have a powell max 3D 712 which is med/light and 2 powell infernos 702 that are also med/light.
I also have a powell max3d 713 which is medium that I can use to dropshot if I need to along with a dobyns champion med/light (which feels more medium to me). These two I don't use very often as the powells are my favorite for dropshoting.

Budget? In general, a 7' ML/XF is a great finesse bass rig. Can throw dropshots, Neko, wacky finesse worms and smaller shaky heads. I throw that rod as much or more than just about anything here in OK either fishing deeper clear water or small rivers. Match it with a 2500 series spinning reel, 8lb nanofil and you are good to go.
I haven't really decided on a budget, because I haven't really decided if I want it to be dedicated super finesse or more all around. I have a high end casting combo that I throw lighter stuff like shakeyheads, senkos, and heavier dropshots. Problem is it's also my favorite texas rig combo so I'm tired of having to choose or retie. I'm not a huge fan of spinning gear but recognize I'm not using the dropshot to it's full potential by having to weigh it down to get distance out of the casting gear.
My perfect spinning rod would be ML to M, XF and would be able to do light dropshots but still have enough power to set on wacky rigs and shakeyheads. I know power/action varies so much between brands that it is gonna take asking around to find it. This weekend I was using a lower end shimano rated M/F and it's a noodle, I couldn't feel a thing.
The reel is covered, got a gift card to LL Bean for xmas and turns out they sell stradics. That and getting on some deeper schooling fish in clear water has me ready to take the plunge.

nice! still a lot of fun I'm sure. Where were y'all fishing out of?
That pic was in pirate's cove on Saturday. Sunday and Monday we left from our place in San Miguel. I ran to TN bay Sunday morning and worked our way back north on the Texas side.

Man thats a pretty graph.
What makes the 3 power rods less conducive to drop shotting? Is it just a feel thing? That's kinda where I'm at, trying to decide if I need to just accept I'm looking for two different rods.

The 3 powell rods are my dropshot rods.
The dobyns and Powell max 3d 713 are just bigger, heavier and stiffer feeling to me. They simply just don't feel as good to me when dropshoting. I use them more for wacky rigging and ned rigs.

Should be able to get a rod that can throw dropshots, wacky finesse worms (wacky full size senkos my be a bit much), and shaky heads up to 1/4oz I think depending on the plastic you're throwing. Hook sets on a shaky head with a big plastic will be your limiting factor. Exposed hooks like on drop shots and wacky shouldn't be a problem.
The St. Croix Mojo Bass - $130 in 6'10" ML/XF is a good rod at that price point.
The Shimano Curado - $160 in the 6'10" ML/XF would be a step up. I really like these rods.
The St. Croix Avid-X - $200 in 6'9" ML/XF would be an excellent choice too.
If you want to spend less than the MOJO Bass, look at the Shimano SLX line or rods or the St. Croix Bass-X for both around $100.

Sweet. Where are you headed? I've always wanted to fis the great lakes region for smallies. I've caught them many times in Oklahoma rivers, in KY lake and in ND, but never fished true classic smallie waters.

Will be in the region for multiple weddings and decided to book a charter for Lake St. Clair, which is above Erie. As of a couple years ago it was making those top lake lists as it has a good largemouth population too. We'll see how it goes, I know absolutely nothing about smallmouth or where to catch them besides what I see on TV.
