My Brother in Law has been ducking hunting Venice for the past few years in a mud boat. He hates it - says he's been getting stuck on sand in some of the ponds on his lease. Is about to sell his boat and buy an airboat to get to his ponds.

I know the sand moves all around in Venice depending on the river. Any any of y'all made this switch before?

Same will stick an airboat just as a duck boat. Only difference is way more horsepower.

Sand is the enemy of both. Pirouges are easy to get out of and move on sand.

Seems like the major fix to his problem is watching the tides.

Is he getting stuck specifically in his ponds or en route to his ponds (i.e. near diversion on W side, near camp ground canal, in ZinZin?)

If its the first, he needs to get gator glide. Makes a night and day diffeerence. However, doesnt matter what you have if the water is out and you can see "mud" no mudboat is going to want to go through the 1/2mud 1/2 sand that is accumulated. Also he needs to run a two blade prop. no idea why it works but it works much better.

If its the second, the Key to hunting venice is to know where your driving IMO. There are so many sand berms and dreding projects (especially dumping out on West Side of River) that it changes month to month).

For example, i stopped running camp ground canal/ Grand Pass to diversion bc of the sand accumulation until months after the project was done so that I could go ride around and mark where the track was.

The marsh in venice is not like Hopedale, GrandMarsh, Chef Pass, Dularge, where you can just take off across any open water and be fine. Open water is more likely have had sand in it than many of the duck ponds. This of course causes problems running mudboats as you need to run the larger bayous/passes which isnt ideal for speed in a mudboat.

TL;DR: tell him to get gator glide on the boat it will help. Switch to a two blade prop. dont try to run across ponds thinking your in the marshes of Biloxi Marsh, Slidell, Dularge. Idle into a place instead of running wide open--if you can idle in you can generally idle out.

I had to help an older gentleman get his boat loaded back on the trailer that was sitting on the concrete ramp one afternoon. He had used gator glide on it and tried to pull off the ramp without hooking up to the trailer...

that stuff works!

What kind of mudboat he has? Is it an inboard mudboat or a surface drive?

Conventional mudboat or a surface drive?
Keep in mind there is a learning curve to run a airboat in big water and sand.
I drove one for years doing seismic and oil spill cleanup and one of the jobs we were on had a fatality on a sand bar off of grand pass were a person was ejected and broke his neck.
