Unless someone's planning on doing a lot of very long range hunting (>350 yds), the 30-06 is always a fine choice for whitetail deer. Yeah, there are a lot of other good standard cartridges as well. The most common recommended standard cartridges for adults would include 260 Rem, 6.5X55, 270 Win, 7mm Mauser, 280 Rem, 284 Win, 7-08 Win, 308 Win and 30-06. There a lot of other cartridges (e.g. magnums, super short magnums, ultra magnums, etc) that are used for whitetail deer hunting, but don't really offer significant advantages over standard cartridges at common ranges. Get a bolt action. Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage and Tika all make fine rifles. Add a quality scope (Burris, Nikon, Pentax or Leupold)in 3-9X and Burris Signature rings w/ a Weaver single piece base. Don't get see-through rings as they are problematic when used w/ scopes.
What was my first deer hunting rifle--a Winchester Model 70 in 270 Win (I was living in the Pacific Northwest at the time). What was my son's first deer rifle--a Savage bolt action in 308 Win. He's killed 12 deer w/ it so far. I agree w/ the earlier poster who was surprised by the absence of recommendations for the 308 Win. Personally, I now try to use at least a 30 caliber gun on PM deer hunts to improve my chances of a larger exit hole.
Shoot some of your buddies rifles to see how you respond to recoil. If recoil sensitive, consider one of the short action rounds (260 Rem, 6.5X55, 7mm Mauser, 7-08 Win or 308 Win) or reduced recoil rounds.

I agree on the 30-06 but what if one day he walks out at 500yds.
Are you going to trust that 30-06 to put him down and not just wound him?
Alittle over kill is always better than just wounding one and it getting away and suffering.
Just my 2 cents.
