Have his draw length measured at Bass Pro or another outlet and go buy the equipment on Craigslist or from another source. You would be amazed at how many people buy all of the good stuff and give it up a year later.

If there is 4-H at his school. Look into Shooting Sports, very safe and they take any experience level.
My daughter saw Hunger Games, wanted a bow. She can shoot "Genesis" which is an early version compound, no sights, etc.
He can also shoot compound, some of those kids have bows that cost thousands.
He can shoot "Bare" which is a recurve.
Some schools supply equipment, some don't. You can get a good bow for cheap on Amazon, Ebay, etc.
If he is learning, this is the way to go. You may want to take him to an archery shop to get him measured, also let him shoot and see what is confortable, left/right hand, etc.
No point is spending a ton of money, start slow and build his interest. The 4-h contests allow for alot of winners. However, if he isn't shooting 100 arrows a night, he won't win.

Out of curiosity, and instead of wasting a new thread, I'll just ask here: what's the maximum range for bows, be it hunting, archery, or whatever?
Posted on 8/21/13 at 9:11 pm to Tom288
Maximum lethal range, maximum range of an arrow?? I will shoot deer confidently only out to about 50 yards

More the general range of an arrow to hit a target, so not necessarily a kill shot but how far out can you hit range targets for example.

There is a guy on YouTube that can hit a target at 100 yards

I'd say 100 yards is a pretty maximum range

We went to West Houston Archery (I-10 and Beltway)...talked to a very knowledgeable person. He showed us the Mission Riot by Matthews. We didn't buy anything. Was mostly there to just learn.

No, it was just an educational trip for me. We didn't stay long. But we will be back.
