Man, I got an almost identical story about my trophy 10 point.
Deer walks up edge of logging road, facing towards me the entire time. At about 75 yards I feel the deer is about to bolt to woods and shoot. Hit him square in front of chest and all 4 of his legs buckle. He collapses straight down...."dead as doornail".
I've lost too many deer getting down and essentially scaring them into running. BUT, this one, I can see in the road...never been so certain a deer was dead. I decide to keep my rifle on him exactly 15 minutes. So at 10 minutes I kind of relax and keep my rifle pointed in his direction, but not aimed. (at this time I know its a real trophy and taken on public land). So I'm staring at a 13-15 minuted dead deer here. I see an ear twitch. ??????? The other ear twitches. His head rises. Body kind of convulses and he stands up!!!!!!!! U got to be freaking kidding me. Get my aim back on him and drop him thru the lungs.
If I would have gotten down anytime before then I am 100% certain I would have lost the deer. First shot went thru his entire body length-wise from the front of the chest to his left rump...and he was standing up in about 12 minutes.
But to answer your question...just depends on angle. If you hit him dead on, like I did....no he wont survive long term. If it went in his chest at a downward angle and came out underneath his chest almost immediately, then maybe.
Moral of the story is...if you can see your dead deer on the ground dont assume he is dead and you getting down wont get his adrenaline going for one last run.

Exactly. I love arguing the most “ethical” way to ambush an animal, kill it, drag it to a truck, ride around and take pictures of its dead body, eat it’s body parts, then mount it on the wall.

You seen a deer die a "natural" death. Try googling deer getting getting caught by coyotes.
You would welcome a gunshot death.

I shot a spike dead on at 15 yards with a 30-06 years ago, he hit the deck with blood everywhere.
In a minute he got up and ran off and I still haven't seen him again.

Two years ago I was after a big 8. Finally saw him one evening right at dark. He was facing me and flicking his tail. Knew he was about to bolt and I couldn’t let it get any darker. Put the crosshairs in the middle of his chest and popped him with the .35 whelen.
Deer cut a backflip then immediately got up and ran off. Zero blood never found a drop. Just so happened while looking for blood I happened up on the deer laying there with his head up 200 yards from where I shot him. Had to go back and get my gun went back down there and shot him through the neck.
Deer was fine my shot was a little to the right and had basically blown his right front leg off he just couldn’t run anymore. I will never take another shot at a deer like that. Pure luck I found him.

Up here we hunt shotgun only for gun seasons, biggest deer I’ve ever taken was one that walked up on me 5 minutes after first light facing me. Put a 12g slug just above the top of the sternum and dropped him dead in his tracks. I get a slug at 40 yards is a little apples and oranges but I don’t see this being a terrible or unethical shot.

Its not a terrible shot, its just a tough one. The chest cavity is very narrow. If I ever have to do it I'm aiming high.

I’ve shot several in the neck. All of them dropped in their tracks. I shot a BIG 8 point that was straight on looking at me. When he picked his head up I shot him halfway up his neck. He fell over stiff legged like wooden barstool. Never twitched.
I’d take a good placed neck shot tomorrow if I knew that was the only shot I was gonna get.

yup, grown men should be expected to know their limitations when shooting. Since the deer had antlers it makes a risky shot acceptable.

Biggest deer of my life and my.only "trophy" buck was facing me with head up...but it was only about 25 yards or so. Ran 50yards. Just couldn't pass up the shot.
I wouldn't take it from long distances though
