Canon t4i with a 18-135 and a nifty 50, plus a cheapo shoulder rig. We also film a good bit with a gopro but I haven't really been incorporating it as much recently.

It's tough to strip set up on my platform because of the front rail unfortunately. One of the only negatives about it. If you watch one of those fly hook sets in there, you can kinda see I tried to strip set and smoked my forearm on the lean rail haha. One of my good buddies always gave me shite about not strip setting, then he got up there and learned the hard way .

Just rewatched and yeah I didn't even notice that the first time haha.

I hear ya about getting shite, when I would go with my older brother back in the day he would curse the sun and moon every time I trout set so I have strip setting engrained into my soul.

We make a trip out there every fall for some big pumpkins on fly its always a blast. Your videos make me frickin itch for October!

rookie question but should all hook sets with a fly rod be a strip set?

Great video, blue moons. Now that I've got my boat, I'm getting into sight casting the redfish in Delacroix. It's an absolute blast

Man do whatever works/you're comfortable with. I find with redfish it doesn't matter too, too much, though there are situations where I think it makes a difference. If you've got a fish close to the boat and you've got a rod with some balls + a steep angle, you'll be fine. I can tell you that a solid 8wt has enough backbone that you'll break a leader on a hookset, so if that starts happening I would try to strip set to dig horizontally into the fish's mouth.

If I'm fishing open water where I think the fish is going to run more or turn his head fast, then I'll try to get myself into a position to strip set.

My knowledge of fly fishing outside of LA is severely limited, but I think strip setting is much more beneficial when fishing for fish that turn their heads and run very quickly (bones, poons, etc.). A lot of times it takes a second for a red to even know he's hooked. Other times, they run like scalded apes. Anyways, just do what you're comfortable with. If you start missing fish, then I'd say reconsider your approach.

Thanks dude. If you ever see us out there, come say what's up. My boat is pretty hard to miss with all the crap I have on it haha.

Thanks man!

Me too hah. I can't wait to get out there in the fall with some poppers. It's hard to beat that.

Great video again. You really need to join and start posting these on 2coolfishing. I think the mention of the matrix and vortex shads will also help Chaz get some business going over here in Texas. I use them a good bit but not many people know about them in these parts. There have been a few of us talking them up on the fishing discussion forum but we still need to get some on the shelves over here. At any rate, great video. Keep making them and tight lines.

ETA: Oh, btw, what are those purple and gold rods yall are using? Obviously I haven't seen them in Texas.

Thanks man. I'll drop a line over there.

I'm really not sure what brand the rods are. I think someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. My buddy just picked up like 3 or 4 of them from Academy a few weeks ago.
