Issue with building bolt guns that make me not jump into it yet is the precise fitting required with some systems.
I own 5 Kelbly actions in various configurations including right bolt/left port, coned bolt, SA, LA, single shot, repeater, flat bolt face. I pick up the phone and speak with Mr. Jim, Ian, or Ryan, and tell them what barrel I want (length, contour, chamber, tight neck, head space, reamer specs, etc .) Barrel is completed and mailed to my home address. Every barrel I've ordered over the last 25 years (13 to be exact) has been a 100% perfect fit. Never a need to send in my action as Kelbly's has perfected pre-fit barrels since 1981. They started with precision tolerance benchrest actions and later designed hunting actions based on the Rem 700 footprint.
Lots of great options today for quality gunsmiths, action / barrel makers, and rifle build components. Do your research, ask lots of questions, and find a reputable GS, company, or business you trust.
On a side note - With the selling of McMillan stocks (2021) and Defiance actions (2022), the new owners have chosen to increase prices and cut back on QC. Sad because both companies once had outstanding owners who gave back to the sport and employed a proud labor force who took pride in their work. Don't blame Kelly or Glenn for selling as both were ready to retire and enjoy life. Unfortunately for Kelly, he passed away 6 months after selling McMillan Stocks.
