sounds like a cylinder misfire. Unburnt gas entered the catalytic converter and out came the white smoke.
Probably a secondary misfire from the coil or wire.
I considered that. Might have been it. Mechanic said diagnostics showed no misfires. He thinks it might've been some carbon build up that broke off and caused a valve to stick. He thinks it was an isolated incident. Now, if it happens again and again, I'm bringing it to a different mechanic.

Yeah I'm thinking something minor, a one off event.

I have an 05 silverado and like to keep engine compartment clean also. Once after washing engine mine did the same thing and I didn't think I was gonna make it home. After a bunch of Internet search and trial and error. I was able to determine it was water and corrosion on a few of the bottom terminals on the computer. Undid battery cables unplugged large computer wire and sure enough I could see the corrosion and moisture on it. Cleaned it up with a small wire bristle brush and a blow dryer. Runs perfect now and I will have to live without cleaning my engine!

Update:
I wanted to resurrect this thread to provide an update. Because this morning my truck did it again. However I noticed something very specific this time. When I started my truck it idled fine. I pressed the brake to put it into drive. When I pressed the brake, a very distinct gurgling noise seemed to come from under my dash. I pressed the brake again and same thing. After the second time, the truck bogged down and smoked from the tail pipe like last time. Brought this straight to the mechanic with my observations.
Diagnosis. Master cylinder is leaking brake fluid (I have been having to top off my fluid on occasion). The brake fluid ate theough the diaphragm in the power brake booster which is powered by vacuum from the intake manifold. It's sucking brake fluid into the engine and burning it off.

And this my friends is why we don't trust Internet diagnostics.

See, this is the first time I heard the gurgling sound from the brakes. I had no way of knowing that the brakes could be the problem the first time it happened. But this time I knew that everything I observed had to be connected. So, at least the problem had been found and is being fixed.

The brakes are a closed system. If you were topping it off regularly that tells you something is wrong with the master cylinder, a manifold etc. Something.

Yeah, I had to top it off once and it didn't get low again for several months. So it kinda got put out of my mind. Last few weeks I've had to top it off twice. So I planned to get it looked at. This morning I couldn't wait any longer.

Run some 93 with some Chemtool in it. Its like seafoam only you aren't paying for nafta.

Read the update a few posts up

It's just impossible to diagnose most things like that via a few Internet posts. You either forget or don't notice details.
That's a gremlin I've never heard of. Makes sense though.
