I drank water straight from a stream once. For no real reason, just because I was young and stupid. I had terrible diarrhea for 2 weeks after. Never again.

quote:Often. There are places where you have to purify everything (farms in VA, ponds with beavers in VT, moose-filled ponds in Maine, trail near towns in PA/NJ/NY, etc.) and there are places where I didn't purify for days (high mountains in NH, melting ice in GA/NC, etc.) You learn quickly what looks good and what doesn't (not by water clarity but by the surroundings). I know people that never purified... ever. Most of my friends carried a little bottle of bleach. I refused to drink water with bleach in it.

whats the most amount of miles you hiked in a day?
quote:These days are called "Zero's" as in 0 miles that day. You should take one at least every 2 weeks and sometimes more often for recovery purposes. I took 1 a week. My goal was usually 100 miles a week so if I did 20 a day for 5 days then I could take 2 zero's or I could get ahead. I usually would do 20-25 miles-a-day for 6 days straight and then zero. I spent all my zero days in a hotel/hostel with tv, junk food from the grocery store, pizza delivery, beer, and porn. I spent one zero day in my tent in Maine and it was amazing. I slept in while it rained and then explored a popular cave nearby all day. There are also "nero's" (near-0's). These are days where you do close to 0 miles. Examples would be walking 5 miles into town or leaving town in the afternoon and only going 2 miles before you set up camp (frequently to save money by not paying for another night).
did you go any days where you didnt hike at all?

There's a 4 state challenge where you touch 4 states in 24 hours. You start in VA and walk through WV and MD before stopping on the PA border. Its 40-something miles. I didn't do it because I stopped for a few days and met with family in Harper's Ferry, WV. There are tons of cool little challenges along the way and most involve big miles or lots of drinking. There's one where you walk 20 miles with 20 beers without stopping until you reach town... all while in a tuxedo (you rent from the hostel).

how did/do you find out about these challenges? just on the trail?

quote:Yea, word of mouth. Some of the hostels and hotels are like trail legends. When in town your dream of the new wilderness ahead, when in the wilderness you dream of the towns ahead. I found myself hoping every town I visited was like a tiny Vegas, Sodom, or Gomorrah.

Little stairs and ladders for crossing barbed wire cow fences. You don't mess up the fence and the animals don't get out.
