is 12.5 miles a day doable for someone new to backpacking?

Should be. Unless you have a lot of elevation change involved.

Got topo maps? I find them very beneficial on these sort of ventures. You can find them online much of the time.

Shouldn't be a problem unless all 678' are at once. If you are decent shape you could cover 12 miles a day with relative ease.

Have done the Chilkoot trail in 2 1/2 days, 33 miles and it's got some rough spots plus some elevation gain of about 3,000' at the end. Playing around much of the time, so you will be fine.

Is that the net elevation change? It looks like that is just the difference between the mountain heights. I would think there would be a lot of up and down across 12 miles, but I am not familiar with the area.

I'm curious as to the actual elevation gain.

Topographic maps.
Edit: Not sure about the AT, but most well known trails have trail guides you can read online or purchase that have detailed sections about each leg of a trip.

did the math.. 11,700 feet in total elevation change... = 2.22 miles in elevation change on the 38 miles in...
then we do it all again to get back
then we do it all again to get back
