water: how much do you drink per day? a gallon? more? water is heavy...there's no way you're packing it on you...where do you get it from?
I'd use 3 liters a day and that's counting my morning coffee and what I need to use for cooking.
Get it from streams, rivers, and snow.

As many as you can get. There is no limit.

I'll have plenty more questions...I currently own next to no gear and Ive only do small hikes on vacation or day hikes at Tunica Hills
assuming some of you are familiar with louisiana trails, where do I go from there? Where is the best place within two hours of Baton Rouge to go on a 3 day hike?

I carry a filter (pump). All depends on how I feel at that moment but we always pay attention to where our next water source will be. If we are a ways from water we will fill up even if it's only another liter. If my camp spot is near a water source I won't bother with filtering, I'll just boil.

Just weighed my pack for the trip this weekend. 49 lbs, including all hunting gear. Not bad at all considering last time it was 67 lbs.
I can't sleep. Too excited about tomorrow.

I'm a smartwool guy for socks. I have a bunch of drifit and got great deals at the columbia outlet in Portland so my clothes aren't anywhere up to par compared to my gear....except for my raingear/snowgear. Stuff just isn't cheap and I'd rather bye some other gear. It works so I've stayed with it

yep. i mean it was my first time backpacking ever.. so i wasnt about to drop a fortune on gear then realize a day into that i hate it... luckily the gfs parents were big hikers so they had all the gear we needed, with the exception of a working stove (broke first night) and a light tent we were pretty well equipped. and we had the times of our lives... time to start investing in the new hobby
Posted on 4/19/12 at 11:31 pm to Wooly
I've been doing it but still don't want to invest in some of it
had gotten into climbing so it was also an easy decision as I needed more gear. No matter what it seems like it never ends
I want a kayak and a bow so it'll just be on the backburner.

yea, i mean when we move to denver it would be time to start getting some good gear, because i can imagine every weekend we would be doing some sort of outdoor activity.
unfortunately its looking like dallas is a strong possibility now, the GF just got done with a corporate job interview with Zales.. but i would rather be in denver.. but i would also like her to have a good job.... damn you cruel world
i know right. mountain biking, kayaking, snowboarding, so many things.... so many Expensive things

Depends on where at. If it's cold and you're in the mountains you'll be okay. I drank melted snow/ice so I didn't filter for the entire states of Georgia, NC, and Tennessee. After Tennessee I started stopping at lower elevations where there was fear of animal droppings in the water, livestock, bugs, etc. Be especially careful near farms in the south and ponds in the north. Maine and New Hampshire have clear water but it's infested with the beaver fever and I don't drink where Moose poop. Filtering is a safe bet.
you really don't want beaver butt
I use a pump, but I'm going to get a steripen for my wife to carry in her pack as a back-up
