quote:Never heard of anything like that. Louisiana is much more dangerous than anywhere on the AT.
2) Heard horror stories about homeless and crap preying on hikers at night while they sleep...did you worry or position yourself off the path at night?
quote:Yes. But they are not allowed in 2 or 3 parks so you will have to have them shuttled from the beginning of the park to the end; this includes Baxter State Park (the final destination in Maine).
1) Does anybody bring a dog on AT?

Osprey Exos pack here. I wouldn't but anything but Osprey. Their warranty is untouchable.

Friend of mine has the exos. Loves it. The warranty is great. Haven't had to use it but when the day comes I'm not worried.

so having a dog would be a pain in the butt then.
The question about sleeping at night. How did you choose your spot to "pitch a tent"?
Posted on 3/20/12 at 5:54 pm to Nativebullet
There are designated spots and shelters (open air structures) along the way that have flat, smooth spots for tents surrounding them. If you want to camp elsewhere then you can sleep wherever you want. I choose places about 100 yards from water for cooking convenience but hopefully not enough to contaminate water (food, soap, body waste) or excessive mosquitoes. Also, a hammock is great because you don't have to worry about rocks. All you need is 2 trees and that is an awesome advantage. You can go anywhere.

1) What's the longest (in days) you went in between towns/establishment? I assume once you hit a town, you restocked on food/water.

ETA: 7 days of food is dumb. You should stop at a post office or convenience store every 3-5 days

Are you required to have bear proof container for food?
Or hang from a tree?
Or hang from a tree?

Ok, two things I never go without on a hike or backpacking trip.
My trekking poles and water bladder. It didn't bother me when I didn't have then but now that I do they're always with me.
What kind of pad? On a long trip a basic pad will get old. I'd spend the money on a neo air. It doesn't get any better than that. Trust me, your body (mental/physical) will love you for it.

So you have the option to 're-group' about every 3 days? And that is averaging how many miles a day?
Posted on 3/20/12 at 6:25 pm to Walt OReilly
No problem.
I'll check back in later. Off to my dart league.

Saw 2 bears a day in New Jersey. Don't worry, black bears are overgrown raccoons. They eat mostly fruit and leftover human food. The only threat is them accidentally hurting you when they tear through your tent for food (so hang it) or stealing your food when you're 3 days from town. Also, bears aren't the only food thieves.

quote:Everyone asks. There is no answer. It depends on the trail. 14 miles a day for the 1st three states, 25-30 in Shenandoah, sometimes as low as 10 in New Hampshire/Maine, etc.
And that is averaging how many miles a day?
