I shoot it well. It doesn't kick much more noticeably than my Glock 27 or LCP. I'm sure someone will correct me on that, but I like it because it feels much better in my hands.

Gotcha.
I want a 3" SP101 because of the longer barrel extra weight and .357 mag chamber, but those airweights are sooooooooooooo much lighter. The triggers are a little better too. Still not sure which one I want.

It is one of my favorite guns, and I have a lot of guns.

Just cause I cheer for team Glock doesn't mean I don't love me some revolvers.

I'm really unsure of what I want. I go back and forth between an airweight and sp101 with some other random things thrown in there occasionally.
I'm sure I'll figure it out one day

You're young, you've got plenty of time.
Unless we lose in November, then you better just buy them all and figure out preferences later.

I wanted the Shield but found the XDs first. Great solid gun. Why are you considering the XD compact over it?

Have I mentioned my wife just ordered this for me?
Posted on 8/29/12 at 7:25 pm to BarDTiger81
Keep her around.
That is the next on my list.
Eta: the gun, not your wife.

I have the Shield 9mm and really like it. Has been hard to find lately tho. Very accurate for 3" barrell and low recoil. Wife shoots it fine too.

Hell he's got enough money to buy us both one

I completed the course for a concealed carry permit and I need some help deciding on a gun. I am stuck between an M&P Shield 9mm, Glock 26, or a Springfield XDM sub compact .45? Help!
pmart32,
It annoys me sometimes when people do I'm about to do, but hopefully you'll forgive me. I'm going to answer your question by recommending a gun you didn't ask about. Actually, I personal recommendation is for none of the three you mentioned.
M&P Shield: Should end up being a good gun, but it's still pretty new. As is common w/ a new gun, there've been a number of problems w/ the gun reported on the 'net. I'd give SA a little more time to work out the bugs. In addition, the Shield has an external safety lever, and a small one at that. Safety levers are fine, but I think it takes more training to handle such a gun well in a self-defense type situation.
Glock and SA XD compact 45: These guns both have double stack mags making them thicker than a single stack mag gun. Maybe double stack mags will work well for you w/ concealed carry, but they don't for me. My first cc gun was a full size SA XD 40 S&W. I didn't carry it long before I realized it wasn't going to work for me.
Best self defense rounds are 357 Mag, 357 Sig, 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP. I like that one of your choices is a 45 ACP, but be sure you're adequately trained for it. Many shooters can't handle it as well as the 9mm. Unless you've trained a lot, I'd usually recommend a 9mm.
I prefer a single stack mag gun as they're much more comfortable to me when I carry inside the waistband (IWB). Single stack mag guns I'd consider would include: Kahr CM9/CW9/P9, Ruger LC9, Walther PPQ, Beretta Nano and possibly Bersa 9cc, Kimber Solo and Shield. I've got a Kel-Tec PF9 and have been very pleased w/ it, but some folks have had quality control problems w/ it; likewise for the Taurus Slim and Diamondback 9mm.
If you feel comfortable w/ 45 ACP, there are also some nice single stack 45's: Kahr CW45/P4/CM45, SA XD-s 45 (but like the Shield, this is a new gun) and Glock 36. Also, one can't leave off the 1911's.
As already mentioned, a revolver (preferably DOA w/ shrouded hammer) in 38 Spec is always a nice choice, especially for a newer shooter.
How are you going to carry your gun: IWB, pocket, outside the waistband, etc. That might make a difference in what gun best suits you.

I'll respond to Tiger's points and back him up because he makes good points. But, my responses are directed at the OP...
I'm sure this is only a mistake, but S&W***. And the Shield has been out since April with an insanely high demand and it has not decreased. I've shot two different Shields and have yet to see a failure.
Agreed here. They are both insanely thick, the slide being very very fat on the XD. They work, but how comfortable it is will determine how much you carry it. Sitting down may become a very uncomfortable experience and your gun will begin to sleep at home. And you know that a gun at home is worthless.
Completely agree... If you plan to carry in the waistband, a single-stack 9mm can go with you just about anywhere without discomfort. I carry my Kahr CM9 100% of the time where legal (or if I'm not hammered).
I would only suggest a Pf9 to someone who has done a good bit of shooting. Compared to my CM9, that Pf9 is fricking painful! The trigger guard bites the shite out of my finger on just about every shot. With that being said, if you get one that runs, it will work when you need it to.
The XDs is great, but also know that with a .45 you get fewer rounds in the gun. Granted you're slinging a larger piece of lead, you get a 5+1 capacity as opposed to a 6+1 or 7+1 with a 9mm.
THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^
You need to have made up in your mind how you plan to carry it. If you have a bad back, as my father does, I suggested he pocket carry a gun. And even though some people say .380 ACP is a pea shooter, it's better to have a .380 in your pocket than a .45 left at home. The good thing about a .380 is that you can carry it all the time with comfort - it just feels like an extra cell phone. My dad's Kahr P380 is the best 380 on the market and not nearly as painful as my buddy's Ruger LCP. But, it's also almost double the price.
So, if IWB, I think a single-stack gun is best. I would go with a 9mm or 45.
If you're carrying in your pocket, some people can carry a Kahr CM9 or M&P Shield in deep pockets but I find them very heavy when fully loaded. I would suggest a .380 for pocket carry, even if it may have some short comings in terms of muzzle energy.
