Faxes, thank you for going through the time and explaining everything. I myself came off a bit harsh as well. (Working for the state does that to me from time to time.)
The whole jest of what I was trying to say was that Remington 700s are fine guns, just no where near the best. The cheap ones that the OP is talking about is fine. To make it great would cost you a brand new Sako. I guess it just depends on how you want to spend your money, bought or built.
As far as the custom 700s, I stand by my NASCAR reference. If you replace everything except the sticker on the hood, it ain't a Toyota. Yes, I know that the 700 bolt is one of the most popular bases to build off of but even that is highly modified and not quite factory like.
Also, my not loving them only stems from the belief of other, better guns out there. I do not put any weight into the liberal agenda regarding the safeties, although it is interesting.

Thanks to Everyone for Contributing. I appreciate the time and knowledge that went into these posts....
Now, does anyone want to discuss optics in another thread?

You start it and I'll throw my 2 cents in. Much like this gun conversation, any of the big namebrands will be a good pick.

See I disagree with you completely on whether they are near the best or not because I've seen what "The Best" looks like as far as accuracy is concerned and it's usually built on a 700 Remington. Does that help the guy that doesn't have a pocket sniper armorer on hand? No. But if he buys a 700, he can if he so chooses make that gun shoot with 'the best'. And it's because of the strength of the action. The design is just a proven performer.
All you have to do though is look at how many models there are of it to realize that Remington is trying to make that rifle available to most anyone that wants one. They do that by cheaping out on stuff like the stock in the lower dollar versions. But the guns themselves are excellent and have the potential of being 'the best' with just a little, or a lot of custom work. It doesn't take much to make one that's much more accurate than the shooter is capable of, so that would be 'the best' that guy could do anyway.
Ultimately, you get what you pay for. But with the 700, at least that's not the end. It can shoot with the best if you want it to. Some of these guns they're coming out with now are already as good as they are going to get, right out the box. And that's more than good enough for anyone to hunt with and you can impress most folks with your targets with them. But they don't have the potential for truly stunning accuracy like your basic 700 does.

I own several. I am still pissed off about the kid killers, and they will remain in the safe forever it looks like. The other ones are fine. It is a cheap accurate gun just like it was intended and built to be and the new ones dont misfire.

Neither do the old ones as long as you leave the trigger alone if you don't know what you're doing adjusting it.

I got mine in a .270 Win and love it. Just have not put any meat on the ground with it yet
