Stay away from chips/programmers/ect if you want to keep the truck for any amount of time. You DEFINITELY run into severe problems with it down the road.

I also suggest not having a winch. I have a 12k pound warn on my truck. It's nice when you need it, but you will constantly be getting phone calls from people for you to come pull them out. It's costly to operate because it eats batteries. If you like mud riding and don't mind pulling people out all the time though, it's very good to have. Actually, since you have a big heavy arse diesel, a winch may not be the worst idea...

Get full replacement bumper. If you just want the looks, get a ranch hand. If you want to smash shite, get a ruenel. Be ready to spend a good bit of money for a full bumper though. They are not cheap and weigh a billion pounds. It's a good investment though because it'll take a hell of a wreck to mess up the front end of your rig. Also don't have to worry about deer jumping out anymore.

Tires are always a good idea.

Rims are personal preference.

A full aftermarket exhaust system is always a good idea.

The fender flares would probably look pretty good on that truck, especially after you put wide arse tires on it.

ETA: No such thing as true dual exhaust on a cummins ppl.

As long as you don't dog your truck the programmers won't kill it. These trucks have and EGR DPF systems that will do more harm then the programmers. I am running stacked boxes on my truck but I don't go out racing it. All the performance stuff I have done to my truck is for better fuel mileage, the go fast part is just an added benefit.

Its not the programmers that do the harm, its people throwing the programmers on there and racing every car they see without building up the tranny, etc..

How long have you been running it with the programmer? I know a guy with a 5.9 that he had a superchip on. He doesn't dog it or anything, he only did it for the fuel millage. He started getting a ton of trouble codes and problems. After he took it off, it was all good.

The problem with them is that the motor can handle the extra power, but not the stuff on it. It also eventually causes communication issues between the computer and some of the sensors. I know people who run stacked programmers and mash out everywhere they go with no problem, and I know people who have completely blown their shite up because of programmers. I guess it just depends on how your luck runs.

On my current truck I have been running them for 50K with no problems. My truck was throwing codes and getting shitty mpg's before I added them and now it runs great. On my old gasser I ran a programmer for over 100k and my dad ran one on his 5.9 for 100K+.

Have any of them been superchips? Perhaps some programmers are more prone to blowin shite up than others.

FWIW, I'm no diesel expert. Just a regular ol gearhead.

I used a superchip programmer on my gasser and my dad ran one on his 5.9. they make a good product but they have many other better options for the cummins.

It's just less of a return since at all times except wide open throttle (or whatever it's called on a diesel since it's not technically a throttle) the engine has plenty of air.

I'm also a member Of cumminsforum.com. Great site lots of info.

You definantly wanna look up H&S Performance these guys know 6.7 liter cummmins performance. Get a DPF and EGR delete and let thAt thing breathe. They also have a great programer which you can get mileage tunes for to help with mileage. Before I did the deletes i was getting 12 mpg and now I average 17-18

+1 on all of this.

I did the dpf delete on my 2008 duramax and have the Edge CTS tuner and I love it. I have had it on there for about 70k miles. I wasn't worried about voiding the warranty. No problems thus far. I went from around 14 mpg to 18 mpg in town.

everyone has black wheels now. I like the ones I have on my truck but if I could do it again I would have probably gone a different route. I would probably still get black wheels but not the ones i have.

I'm on my phone but you have the ones with the star in the middle right?
I love those rims. But yeah, like a year or two ago when one or two guys in town had them I thought man those are some pimp rims. But it seems like now everybodys got them. Your truck looks good, but I feel ya, it's nice having something different.

I'd say if you're looking to gain mileage stick with this. Any of the new diesels with the DPF will get fairly crappy mileage with the DPF junk.

I'd say do DPF and EGR delete, intake, 4" turbo back exhaust(I <3 straight piped Cummins ) or get a setup with a muffler if you're not into the sound. Definately look into tuning. However, I suggest staying away from shelf tunes(I.E. Bullydog, Edge, Superchips, etc). Check around cumminsforums for the best available custom tuning. Like mentioned for about the same money you get much better tuning and in the future if you decide to add more junk(injectors, bigger turbo(s), etc) the custom tuning can be redone to work with the new stuff...shelf tunes most likely wont be able to reach the full potential. Just because you're tuning doesnt mean you need to go apeshit, just a mild basic tune to gain mileage and a little power will be great. Like all things, being moderate on the throttle will lead to a long, happy life for your diesel and components.

Well said. I know a guy who picked up a 5.9 Cummins and bought a Smarty about 2 weeks after buying the truck. I warned him that the tranny behind the 5.9 is weak and the Smarty is serious business. He didnt listen. Put the Smarty on the truck and did about 10 drag races against a Mustang back to back down his street. Low and behold his tranny blew that day. Idiots.

Another buddy of mine built his tranny on his 4x4 single cab 5.9 and threw a Smarty on it. Holy shite that thing can move. I won't even bother running my 7.3 against him.
