Found a good price on an 18 hp four stroke Tohatsu. Dude says it pushes his 14x36 about 27 mph. I'm thinking maybe 20 mph on the Bass Tracker?

I'm not looking to break any speed records, just wanna get on plane and have something reliable/fuel efficient.

Any thoughts?

Nope not a good idea. Hull probably rated for at least a 50. Find a 50.

I have a 17 ft Bass tracker with a 50 Merc. No way would I go with anything less than 40. An 18 ho won’t even get it in plane if loaded.

That 16 FT is rated for 40. My 17 is rated for 50. Mine with me and my son will get up to 34 mph.

I had the side console 1648 with a 25. You are lucky to hit 20. I swapped to a 50 (max rated) and I get 34-35 now and it’s fully loaded with gear, force tm, three batteries, full fuel, and me.

I doubt you'll get on a plane with an 18hp, and you won't get near 20 mph.

#1, you're not going to have tilt/trim

I found this on a boating website

quote:

Re: 16ft bass tracker w. 25hp

My buddy has a 91 Tracker T17 with a 25HP 2 stroke and it moves pretty good.. The older Trackers were made a lot lighter than the later models, you'll plane out but your hole shot won't be the greatest. Figure about 25mph max with 1 person in the boat. That should be fast enough for weekend fishing trips. If you want more speed, go with a 50HP 2 stroke.

That year Tracker is lightweight and has a fast hull. Factor in the fact that the motor is a 2 stroke which is lighter than a 4 stroke. If you balance it out just right you'll plane with no problems, i.e. watch your fuel tank level, store your batteries on the port side, fill livewell only when needed, etc. I'd recommend getting a hydroplane for the motor, it will make a big difference.

I have a 92 T17 Tracker with a 50hp Evinrude and it gets up to around 42mph with 1 person, empty livewell and minimal fuel in the tank. I'm running a 19" pitch cupped prop. This thing is fast for a Tracker.
