This jumped straight out of water, white belly facing us, and flopped on its side. I have seen porpoise and this was much bigger. It was a good ways away, and I didn't think orcas were in the GOM. But I know what I saw

Hmmmm article i read from '09 pretty much said they estimate around 500 killer whales live in the Gulf feeding on dolphins and tuna. Usually are seen in waters 1- mile deep and more.

Orcas are pretty mobile and move around quite a bit. You can find them in any ocean region in the world.

Most likely an Orca. Dall's porpoise grow to less than 10', Orcas can double that.

Dall's porpoise

Orca

This is what I was referring to as a pygmy sperm what but I have no real idea. I'm no whale expert by any means but I've seen these at least 20 times in the past...

Never seent an orca in the gulf. But I have seen numerous sperm whales (I think that's what they were) and many whale sharks. Got in the water with a pod of whale sharks once. Pretty incredible. Although I was to scared to let go of the transom . I wish I would have had a gopro could've made an awesome video

Uncommon, mainly live in the N. Pacific but variations have been seen in many places.

I thought Orcas were a cold water species?

No, some pods actually spend a lot of time off the West Coast

Uh, the water off the west coast is cold.
