If you are going to be on the water all day but not fishing, i wouldn't even get costas. I love mine for fishing, but there are definitely lighter, more comfortable brands out there. I'd rather wear maui jim's. They are much more comfortable and still great on the water...I only prefer my costas for sight fishing.

580's are worth it!! Just get the gray/black lens if not using for fishing.

I've been thinking about getting some costa's too. I don't fish a lot but I hunt a great deal. I need something for Colorado on those sunny days. I have a pair of polarized oakleys but I'm not sure if the costa's or any other kind would be better. Anyone have any ideas on that??

If you won't be fishing, and thus won't be trying to see down into the water far, I wouldn't worry about the 580s.
This, I bought my first pair, didn't know about the different lenses. So now I have both, 580G's for fishing, 400P for everything else.

I've had polorized Oakleys, Raybans, & Maui Jims, and the Costa 580 lens blows them all away bar none IMHO. The Costa 400 lens is very comparable to all the above brands I mentioned. The 580 steps it up a notch.
the G means glass lens, P plastic.....580 comes in both. Go into the store and ask the clerk to walk outside with you and try each lens 400 vs 580 and make your own conclusion.

If you're only using them for sailing, I wouldn't get the Costas, but if you're set on that frame, get the 400s.
According to a friend of mine that races semi-professionally, Costa's work too well and cut the glare so much that he can't see the wind on the water.
Look into Kaenon glasses.

I have been lookin at Costas as well and was wondering some of these things.
The biggest pain in the arse of my whole situation is I need prescription because I hate contacts and mine will be used a lot for sight fishing but also for driving every day etc.
Is glass really that much better than plastic? I was liking the weight of plastic. And it seems the consensus is 580 is worth it for fishing.
Lastly what's the best color for inshore in LA? I know their blue is the big one, but I was thinking amber or copper for that muddy water?

Not worth it in plastic. Glass lenses are way better. I won't buy plastic lense sunglasses again

Everything is a little crisper. A co-worker has the 400 green mirrored glass I bought the 580 green mirrored glass. We both agreed the 580's were a little sharper when we went outside and tried them. I have the Tag frames FWIW

I wore the amber for years but my newest ones are the blue (gray) 580 glass, they're far better in bright conditions. I'll stick with the gray from now on.

The reason I like Costa's in general is they wrap around your face and block out more light from the side than Maui Jim's or Rayban's.

this has been helpful. when we say gray do we mean the straight up gray or the "blue mirror with the gray base"?
