Im with mtb010 with this.
An old man should be able to enjoy his twilight with old hunting buddies if he wants to.
Nothing beats working your own lease, creating habitat and harvesting a nice deer for your neck of the woods.....
But, not everyone has that opportunity, energy or resource.
And yes, hunting public land can be sketchy as f**k.
Don't tell me to send a 72 year old man into public land that some a-hole thinks is "his" honey hole. I've seen that deer hunting, duck hunting, mule deer hunting and elk hunting. I've had guns drawn and all the stupid shite happen. Especially over duck blinds.
Safe, fun and convenient for an old timer? Yes, I get it and support it.

And here’s why. The ranch fenced in a public resource without compensation.
Not sure I understand this statement.. Can you explain? The landowner owns the land so its not a public resource, correct?

Deer belong to the state.

Here’s a low fence hill country property that took me ten seconds to find. Feeders and shooting houses. Older hunters don’t have to have a high fence to enjoy hunting.

Well, no shite sherlock. And all you need is a long bow to hunt, yet I bet you use a compound bow and a gun to make it easier.

Ah... Yeah I was thinking land as the resource

Texas Lawmaker Who Breeds Deer Wants to Abolish the State Wildlife Agency That Regulates Deer Breeders
We have a lawmaker that owns a breeding facility introducing legislation to do away with the agency that oversees the captive breeding industry.
I'm sure neither of these guys have an ax to grind at all.
quote:
Texas Rep. Pat Curry (R-Waco) says his proposed legislation is an attempt to reform and improve the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, an agency that he claims has “lost its way.” It’s one of several bills filed in the Texas legislature that seeks to overhaul the state’s management of Chronic Wasting Disease and appears to be written explicitly for the Texas deer breeding industry.
We have a lawmaker that owns a breeding facility introducing legislation to do away with the agency that oversees the captive breeding industry.
quote:
A separate bill filed by Curry this month would abolish the Texas Animal Health Commission, which has traditionally regulated livestock but now oversees captive deer herd depopulations along with TPWD’s wildlife division. The TAHC also plays a major role in CWD testing and surveillance across the state.
quote:
Curry, who failed to mention the agency’s role of conserving fish, wildlife, and habitat across the state, has introduced another bill that would severely limit TPWD’s ability to regulate deer breeders. H.B. 3607 would eliminate certain provisions around permits, remove some existing regulations, and reduce the penalties for most breeder violations. It would also raise the minimum required height for breeder fences from seven to eight feet. A companion bill was filed earlier this month by Sen. Bob Hall (R-Edgewood), who has repeatedly claimed that TPWD and TAHC “have been weaponized” with the purpose of “ending deer breeding in Texas.”
Accordingly, Hall has introduced a separate bill this session that would make pen-raised whitetail deer private property.
I'm sure neither of these guys have an ax to grind at all.

It’s not the high fence that makes it so successful. It’s the Hill Country. Texas Hill country area has more deer than many states have in the entire state. But little public land.
