Woodcock Areas?

Looking to start woodcock hunting this year. Grew up upland hunting, but woodcock aren't really a thing back home.
I have a 2 y.o. English Cocker that obeys and retrieves well. Never flushed anything with him, but I'd imagine he'll hold up his end of this bargain better than I will.
All that said, where should I go? Looks like the public land options are down in the A- basin or further north, like Kisatchie?
Anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance, OB.

Not sure where you are located--but the pearl river swamp is generally loaded with them in January. When i am Walking to stands in Bogue Chitto NWR after Christmas the woodcock will be in all the briar thickets and blow downs about 100 yards off of the river. We never specifically hunt them.
Have also seen quite a few of them in the upper Pearl River WMA.

It’s a good bit farther but Indian Bayou WMA should be productive. A man in my neighborhood who didn’t have children was a member of Indian Bayou hunting club before it became a WMA. He took me and my friend to his club often. He had an English Setter and we had several good hunts there.

I second Bogue Chitto Nwr and pearl river wma. If it you get a cold wet winter there usualy plenty. I live and hunt just north of there along the Pearl, and that whole river flyaway holds them.

All I can add to the conversation is to not be suprised if your spaniel brings you a live one. Sometime they don't flush and remain motionless.
My English springer would nab them all the time and bring them to me completely unharmed. Damn I miss that dog.
I never trained him to do anything, he would just either naturally know how or figure it out by watching.

Usually Sherburne in late December, January as long as there's water.
