"Are you a US citizen?" has been a standard census question since the 1850 census.

Whats the big deal?

Census Citizenship Question will need to be resolved by June 1st. That is when the Census Bureau starts printing the questionnaire.

SCUTUS has agreed to hear the case on 4/23/19. SCOTUS is only hearing arguments 3 days(4/27, 4/28, 4/29) after 4/23. They will probably send it back to the lower courts after hearing the initial argument. That means it will not have time to be put on the 2020 census.

The Federal District Court decided in August to hear the case in January. It took 4 months before they could hear the arguments and 2 months for a decision to be made after the start of arguments.

Can Trump not just tell them to include it anyways?

I don’t think that’s how it works?

Until now. Just tell them to go ahead and start printing.

Then, on June 1st, just say.. "Oops, we'll fix it next time."

It's easier to get forgiveness than it is to get permission.

I agree, the SCOTUS will uphold these decisions

Well, that's like your biased opinion.

I would think even before the SCOTUS gives a decision there will be another lawsuit against the citizenship question. It will be in a different state for different reasons than the current lawsuit.
